Both The Mortal Thor and The Immortal Thor have been consistently excellent comics from Marvel. While The Immortal Thor revisited the character’s roots while exploring new ideas, it also cleverly set the stage for Thor’s eventual fate. Though not a surprise, Thor’s death felt like a natural conclusion to a significant story arc. Now, The Mortal Thor continues the narrative, and it’s been remarkably well-executed so far. The story of Sigurd Jarlson is compelling, and issue #5 perfectly demonstrates why this series is so strong.
This issue is exceptional – I’m not sure where to even begin with the praise! Ewing is clearly at the top of their game, and it’s evident from the very first page. The story opens with a conversation between Loki and Odin, and it’s exactly what you’d hope for from Ewing writing these two. It answers some questions while still keeping plenty of mystery alive. The dialogue is fantastic – every line feels loaded with meaning. Ewing has been doing incredible work with Thor recently, building a story with so much depth that you barely notice the lack of a traditional fight until the very end. It’s a truly compelling read.

Despite being mostly conversation, this issue is incredibly engaging. You’re constantly wondering what will happen next and how the characters will react. It skillfully builds suspense through dialogue, with each line adding to the growing story and revealing more about characters like Loki and Odin, and the fate of Sigurd. The pacing is excellent; the story flows quickly and keeps you hooked from beginning to end, culminating in the introduction of a fantastic new villain for Thor. It’s a beautifully crafted issue and a truly enjoyable read.
Pascual Ferry Turns In the Best Art of the Series So Far

I’ve been following Pascual Ferry’s work in American comics for a long time, and he consistently avoids following trends, which has resulted in a really distinctive style. It reminds me of Moebius, a legendary French artist, but Ferry has made it his own. He’s drawn Thor before, and it’s clear his skills have evolved – and for the better. What really stands out is the linework. Usually, Ferry’s lines have a soft, almost dreamy quality, but here they’re bold and confident, packed with incredible detail. The faces in this issue are particularly impressive; the characters’ expressions really bring the dialogue to life.
Matt Milla’s use of color is a key element in making this issue so effective. The artwork conveys a sense of realism, as if the previous events were a dream and now the consequences are coming due. This is achieved through a darker, more impactful color palette than seen in earlier issues, giving the art a new weight and seriousness. The entire creative team seems to have found a strong visual style, which greatly enhances the story. The detailed linework combined with the rich, dark colors powerfully communicate the story’s mood.
The latest issue of The Mortal Thor (#5) is a truly exceptional comic book. Al Ewing crafts a rich and compelling story, unfolding it at just the right speed to keep you completely engaged. It feels like a complete journey, and you’ll immediately want to read more. The artwork by Ferry and Milla is stunning, conveying a wealth of emotion and detail through both its composition and coloring. I thoroughly enjoyed every panel of this issue and am eagerly anticipating the next installment.
