The Most Devastating ‘80s Animated Classic Is About To Leave Peacock

As a huge animation fan, I’m really excited about what Peacock has planned for February! They’re starting the month strong with The Boss Baby and Trolls on February 1st, and then later in the month, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is coming to the platform. January was already a fantastic month for animated movies on Peacock – they had this really emotional, nostalgic film that I loved – but sadly, it’s leaving the service soon, so I’m trying to watch it again before it’s gone. But February looks like it’s going to be even better!

Following the success of films like The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, and The Land Before Time, Don Bluth’s All Dogs Go to Heaven was a memorable animated musical released in 1989. Set in 1939 New Orleans, the film centers on Charlie, a German Shepherd who, after being wronged by a friend, escapes from Heaven to get revenge. He unexpectedly forms a bond with a young orphan girl who has the special ability to talk to animals. Unfortunately, despite being added to Peacock on January 1st, All Dogs Go to Heaven is already set to leave the streaming service soon, likely by the end of the month.

All Dogs Go to Heaven Is an ‘80s Animated Classic That Still Holds Up

The 1980s were a fantastic time for animated movies, with classics like The Little Mermaid and The Brave Little Toaster. All Dogs Go to Heaven is right up there with the best of them. Beyond its excellent voice cast – featuring Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise – and its strikingly detailed animation, the film tells a truly special story. It follows Charlie, a flawed gambler, as he transforms into a hero, offering an inspiring yet surprisingly mature and sometimes dark narrative. All Dogs Go to Heaven stood out from other late-80s animated films by fearlessly tackling complex themes like death, murder, gambling, and addiction.

Just a heads up: All Dogs Go to Heaven is a really sad movie. It’s one of the most emotionally difficult animated films ever made, so keep a box of tissues handy if you decide to watch it. The movie deals with some surprisingly dark and mature themes, and its ending is both beautiful and heartbreaking. What makes it even more tragic is the real-life story of Judith Barsi, the voice actress who played Anne-Marie. She was tragically murdered by her father while the film was being made, and her final lines – Charlie’s goodbye to her character – were recorded after her death, making it a final, devastating farewell.

Where to Stream All Dogs Go to Heaven After It Leaves Peacock?

The classic movie All Dogs Go to Heaven is moving from Peacock, but you can still watch it online. It’s now available on MGM+ and can be streamed for free on Tubi, Pluto TV, and The Roku Channel.
