In the realm of DC Comics, Green Lanterns are among the most potent characters. Equipped with magical rings granting astonishing powers, they dedicate themselves to combating wickedness. Notably, Green Lanterns have showcased extraordinary power displays and have been integral members of numerous Justice League groups. When discussing the mightiest heroes within the DC universe, comic book enthusiasts often refer to figures like Guy Gardner, Hal Jordan, and John Stewart.
Although they possess immense power, the Green Lanterns have experienced some embarrassing setbacks throughout their history. Being invincible isn’t part of any hero’s story, and the annals of the Green Lanterns prove this point as they have encountered defeats that were both humiliating and unexpected. Some losses came from a swift punch to the face or a deceptive trick, demonstrating that even these powerful heroes are not immune to defeat. Furthermore, their pride has occasionally led them into situations where they suffered humiliation at the hands of their foes.
7) Did Batman Beat Hal Jordan With a Yellow Brick?
Since their debut in comic books during the Golden Age, the Green Lanterns have had some peculiar weaknesses. Two of the most recognized vulnerabilities these heroes possess are wood and the color yellow. In Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #4, Batman remarks that he could halt a Green Lantern using a yellow brick. This suggests that at one point, Batman outsmarted Hal Jordan by tossing a brick at him, which would be an embarrassing way for a Green Lantern to lose, given their immense power.
6) Batman Steals Hal Jordan’s Ring
The power of a Green Lantern originates from the ring they carry. Given its significant role for these intergalactic champions, one might expect great care in safeguarding it. However, surprisingly, Hal Jordan’s ring was taken by Batman with relative ease. In Justice League #1, a comic published as part of the New 52 overhaul, we witness an interaction between Hal Jordan and Batman. During their conversation, Batman effortlessly removes the ring from the Green Lantern’s hand. Losing such a valuable item so swiftly can be somewhat embarrassing, more so because Hal initially didn’t even realize it had been taken.
5) Superman Gets a Piece
Throughout their history, several distinct characters have shown disrespect to various Green Lanterns, including Superman. In issue #4 of “Dceased: War of the Undead Gods“, Ganthet, a Guardian, attempts to restrain Superman. Unfortunately for Ganthet, this encounter does not end well as Superman delivers a powerful punch straight to his face, knocking him out instantly. This incident underscores a lesson that challenging Superman is unwise, as he can swiftly and decisively incapacitate anyone who dares to cross him.
4) Death by Ice
In “The Human Target #6”, I found myself on the receiving end of various defeats. As Green Lantern, I met an unfortunate end when a single punch to the face ended my life. In the heat of the encounter with the Human Target and his love interest Ice, I retaliated impulsively, attacking them both. However, it was Ice who, in the chaos, froze the Green Lantern. This unexpected turn led to the Human Target delivering a punch that shattered me. Remarkably, this echoes the time Batman delivered a similar blow to the Green Lantern, defeating me instantaneously. The swiftness and abruptness of this defeat were humiliating, leaving me with little room for pride or dignity.
3) Guy Gardner Loses His Clothes
During the “Emerald Twilight” narrative, fans witness Hal Jordan succumbing to Parallax’s possession. In an effort to subdue him, Guy Gardner confronts Hal, but ends up being thoroughly humiliated instead. The climax of their fight results in Hal dealing such a powerful blow that it shatters Guy’s power ring, causing his outfit to disintegrate and leaving him in just his underwear. This loss stands as one of the most embarrassing moments for Green Lanterns, as Guy essentially had his trousers forcibly removed from him.
2) Weak to Wood
In many comic book stories, even the mightiest superheroes like Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and the Green Lanterns possess vulnerabilities to keep their powers in check. For instance, Superman is vulnerable to kryptonite; Aquaman cannot survive outside of water for extended periods; Wonder Woman was once subdued by being bound by a man; while the original Green Lantern (Alan Scott) suffered defeats because he was weak against wood. This simple weakness can prove humiliating, as it’s often easy for enemies to capitalize on the Lanterns’ vulnerability.
1) Batman Punches Guy Gardner
In the comic book “Justice League #5”, Guy Gardner exhibits a boisterous personality, which often leads to trouble. This time, it lands him in a confrontation with Batman. Despite appearing confrontational initially, their interaction is brief, as Batman easily knocks out Guy with a single punch. The rest of the Justice League watches in awe, demonstrating that challenging Batman can result in a swift and embarrassing defeat. This incident underscores the fact that everyone should think twice before crossing paths with Batman.
