Many classic horror films have been so popular that they’ve spawned sequels. For example, there are twelve films in the Halloween series, and five Exorcist movies (with another one coming soon). Even films once considered standalone, like Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby, have now gotten follow-up films. However, plenty of horror masterpieces remain one-of-a-kind, such as Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook.
The 2010s were a fantastic decade for horror, seeing both established franchises and exciting new independent filmmakers gain recognition. A standout film from this era was David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows, which quickly became a fan favorite. It received a 95% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and made over $20 million despite only costing $1 million to produce. So, fans were thrilled to hear in 2023 that a sequel, They Follow, was in the works, with Mitchell and star Maika Monroe both returning. Monroe recently confirmed that They Follow is her next project, and she describes it as being “twice as messed up” as the original.
IT Follows Star Confirms Sequel Is Finally Filming Soon
During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Ethan Hawke revealed that filming for the sequel to ‘They Follow’ is about to begin. When host Josh Horowitz asked how the new movie’s intensity compares to the first – which Hawke rated an 8 or 9 out of 10 – he hinted at something even more intense to come.
We’re estimating this will likely be rated around 15 or 16. It’s definitely pushing creative limits, and even just reading the script gives you a strong feeling of nostalgia with its deliberate pacing and visual style.
Mitchell’s It Follows was a remarkably effective horror film, both as a symbolic story and for its uniquely unsettling atmosphere. The film centers on Jay, a young woman afflicted by a strange curse: she’s relentlessly pursued by a mysterious entity that can only be transferred to another person through sexual intimacy. This entity can take the form of anyone, living or dead, and is visible only to its current target, resulting in a mix of genuinely frightening scenes and surprisingly funny moments.
Based on the film’s title and initial tagline, “It’s everywhere,” viewers are anticipating a sequel that significantly broadens the scope of the original movie’s curse – potentially reaching a scale similar to the expansion from Alien to Aliens. Now that Monroe has confirmed this is her next film, a 2027 release seems possible, though no official date has been announced.
Fans are really hoping to learn who will compose the music for the upcoming film, They Follow. The original movie featured a particularly memorable and chilling score created by Disasterpeace, and many are wondering if he’ll be back for the sequel. Now that filming is about to begin, an announcement about the composer could be coming soon.
