The epic saga of Star Wars is set to grace the big screen once more, although it seems that the most intriguing film on Lucasfilm’s list may not appear for some time. It has been six long years since we saw Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which not only concluded the Skywalker Saga but also marked the last film in the series to be released in cinemas as of now. Fortunately, this will alter in May 2026 with the debut of The Mandalorian and Grogu. Following a year later, we can look forward to Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling. There are also plans for a movie based on Rey’s New Jedi Order, featuring Daisy Ridley’s return, as well as several other projects at various stages of development.
Among them is the upcoming film “Dawn of the Jedi,” directed by James Mangold, which delves into the roots of the Jedi and possibly the Force itself, with events unfolding approximately 25,000 years before the chronology of “Star Wars Episodes 1-9.” Although it was initially announced at Star Wars Celebration in 2023, there’s been limited substantial development on it since then. Mangold previously worked on the Bob Dylan biopic titled “A Complete Unknown,” and now he’s teaming up with Timothée Chalamet to propose a movie about a motocross heist [according to Deadline].
Despite the movie package being relatively new, it’s creating quite a stir and appears more developed than “Dawn of the Jedi,” as it already has a lead actor assigned. Ridley Scott Mangold is currently engaged in scripting, directing, and promoting his film “A Complete Unknown.” There’s speculation that this new project might delay his involvement with the Star Wars franchise. At Celebration Japan in April, Kathleen Kennedy from Lucasfilm confirmed that “Dawn of the Jedi” is still in the works, but provided no additional details or schedule for the movie.
The upcoming release titled Dawn of the Jedi, or whatever its official name might be, is a significant milestone for Star Wars, as it represents an unprecedented shift in the franchise’s timeline. Compared to the New Jedi Order and Starfighter, which are set several years beyond The Rise of Skywalker, this new installment takes us back a staggering 25,000 years, marking the most drastic departure from the norm in live-action Star Wars history. This leap in time is only comparable to something as groundbreaking as the Knights of the Old Republic video games.
The Mangold film’s era remains largely uncharted, offering ample room for creative freedom. This film has the potential to significantly reshape our perspective on the Jedi Order and the Force. Beyond that, it could redefine our concept of Star Wars movies as it might, and indeed should, offer a unique take, illuminating the galaxy far, far away in an unprecedented manner. Alternatively, it could delve into an entirely new galaxy altogether.
It’s high time that Star Wars ventured beyond the familiar territory of the Skywalker Saga. For far too long, it has been heavily focused on adhering to the characters, timeline, and iconography from the original saga, with even the upcoming releases offering only minimal departures. However, Mangold’s “Dawn of the Jedi” could be the one to break these molds – not just because he is an excellent director, but also because it has the potential to offer something fresh and exciting for Star Wars fans. Here’s hoping that Lucasfilm moves forward with this project without any unnecessary delays. It would be a pity if yet another promising Star Wars project ended up in development limbo or was scrapped altogether after being announced.
On May 22, 2026, I’ll be catching the latest adventure of The Mandalorian and Grogu on the big screen. And then a year later, on May 28, 2027, I’m looking forward to Star Wars: Starfighter. As for other Star Wars movies, no release dates have been announced as of now.
