The 1990s delivered a fantastic era for science fiction movies. Fans enjoyed huge blockbusters like Total Recall, Independence Day, Jurassic Park, and The Fifth Element, along with popular and enduring classics such as Gattaca. However, some truly excellent sci-fi films from that decade were initially overlooked or misunderstood by both audiences and critics. Thankfully, these films are now gaining the recognition they deserve, and one of the very best is currently available to stream for free on Pluto TV.
Released in 1997, Starship Troopers is a sci-fi action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier. The film, based on Robert A. Heinlein’s novel, takes place in the 23rd century and follows young Johnny Rico as he and his fellow soldiers fight an alien race called the Arachnids in a war for Earth’s government, the United Citizen Federation. While the movie, starring Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Muldoon, and Michael Ironside, wasn’t a big success when it came out and received negative reviews, it’s now being recognized as a brilliant satire. Initially, some believed it promoted fascist ideas, but now viewers see it as a clever commentary on those very ideas.
Everyone Missed the Point of Starship Troopers in 1997
When Starship Troopers first came out, most viewers didn’t understand its true meaning, and it’s easy to see why. The film initially appears to be a straightforward, pro-military action movie, showing soldiers fighting bravely even when facing difficult circumstances. However, a closer look reveals a much deeper message. Starship Troopers is actually a critique of the military, fascist ideologies, and the manipulative power of propaganda. The film’s satire becomes clearer with each viewing, showcasing Paul Verhoeven’s skill in subtly embedding subversive themes within the action.
Beyond its satirical themes, Starship Troopers is simply a really enjoyable movie. It’s famously violent and exaggerated, and even as a satire, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The special effects, while a bit old now, are still charming – the Bugs are truly unique! – which gives the film a playfully over-the-top feel. Though it wasn’t initially well-received, more and more people are recognizing Starship Troopers as the clever and entertaining film it is.
As a big movie fan, I was really excited to hear last March that Neill Blomkamp is planning a remake of Starship Troopers! Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten many updates about it since the initial announcement, so it feels like the project is still very much in the early stages. I’m hoping we’ll get some more details soon!
