A hilarious movie that critics and audiences both loved is now available on HBO Max! The streaming service already has a lot of funny options, like Evan Almighty, The Devil Wears Prada, and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. But the newest addition is a real standout – many consider it one of the funniest films of the last decade, and people are still hoping for a follow-up movie.
The action comedy Game Night, directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, became available on HBO Max on April 4th. The film follows a group of friends whose game night takes a wild turn when a fake kidnapping unexpectedly becomes real, throwing them into a thrilling and dangerous adventure where it’s hard to tell what’s a game and what’s not. Starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, Game Night was a hit when it came out in 2018, earning $117 million worldwide and an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but a sequel hasn’t happened despite many fans hoping for one.
Game Night Is a Sleeper Hit Comedy That Deserved a Sequel
With comedies facing challenges in theaters, Game Night stood out as a genuinely funny and welcome success – one we’d love to see repeated. Unlike many studio comedies of recent years that rely on crude jokes and improvisation, Game Night features a clever, well-planned story. The film’s humor comes from the great chemistry between the actors and its surprising twists. Every joke and detail actually matters later on! It expertly mixes hilarious moments with real thriller elements, like exciting car chases and shootouts, making it both funny and a thrilling ride.
Despite being released nearly a decade ago, the comedy Game Night remains surprisingly good. While the film was both a critical and commercial success and even hinted at potential future adventures, a sequel has never materialized and seems unlikely. In 2023, one of the filmmakers explained they prefer leaving audiences wanting more, rather than forcing a continuation. They described the ending as a deliberate, but fake, setup for a sequel, believing it would be difficult to surpass the original Game Night.
What’s New on HBO Max?
HBO Max is offering a lot of exciting new content this April! Just a few days into the month, they’ve added popular movies like Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Practical Magic, and Twister. Fans can also enjoy films from the Alien, The Mummy, and Mortal Kombat series.
