The “Isekai” genre – stories about ordinary people transported to fantastical worlds – has become incredibly popular in anime. While many of these shows feature everyday characters finding themselves in magical settings, some focus on gamers who are pulled into the video games they love. One series, in particular, stands out for its exciting battles and helped define the genre. Good news for fans: the show is returning for a third season! A release window has been announced, and we’ve gotten our first glimpse of what’s to come.
The anime series Shangri-La Frontier debuted in 2023 and has released two seasons totaling fifty episodes. The story follows Rakuro Hizutome, a player known for conquering easy games, who finds himself in a challenging new virtual reality world where his skills make him incredibly powerful. Featuring a character who wears a bird mask, Shangri-La Frontier has announced a third season coming in 2027, and Studio C2C is returning to animate it. A new poster has been revealed, offering a sneak peek at the upcoming season (see below).

The World of Shangri-La Frontier Returns

Season three of “Shangri-La Frontier” is coming next year! A new promotional image shows Sunraku preparing for “Galaxia Heroes: Chaos,” featuring him in costume and alongside three mysterious figures with glowing eyes. The story picks up right after season two, as the battle between the American team STAR RAIN and the Japanese team Nitro Squad is about to begin.
What sets Shangri-La Frontier apart from other isekai anime? It’s a surprisingly low-pressure story that will especially appeal to fans of challenging games like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring. The main character, Rakuro, is skilled at what he does, and even though he’s rarely in danger, the story remains engaging and impactful. The characters are all incredibly likeable, making you genuinely invested in their journey. Based on a popular light novel series that started in 2017 and is still ongoing, Shangri-La Frontier has the potential to be a long-running anime. In a crowded isekai landscape, this story is definitely worth checking out.
