Initially unveiled at Computex earlier this year, details about when the MSI Claw A8 portable gaming PC will be available beyond China have yet to emerge.
As a researcher, I’ve recently come across an interesting development – the Claw A8 is now available for pre-order on several European retail platforms. To be frank, this device comes with a premium price tag that’s hard to ignore.
Certainly, since MSI hasn’t made an official statement, there’s still a possibility that this might just be a temporary label. However, considering the existing market price of the Intel-equipped Claw, it seems quite plausible.
The reports indicate prices nearing €1,000 ($1,175), which puts it in the same price range as the Intel-powered Claw 8 AI+ when it initially launched. However, despite its immense power, the cost seems excessive for a handheld device.
After initially setting at a somewhat high price of $899/$899, The Claw 8 AI+ may likely adjust to a similar price range for its AMD version in the future.
In simpler terms, as TechRadar suggests, it’s quite expensive. The main distinction appears to be the usage of the AMD Z2 Extreme processor instead of an Intel chip.
It’s undeniable that the current Claw 8 AI+ is excellent, but there’s no arguing against the fact that for less than half the price, you can purchase the most affordable Steam Deck. Despite the fact that both Claws are more potent and better-equipped, when you’re discussing hundreds of dollars, it becomes a difficult proposition to sell.
MSI still struggles with effectively promoting their products, which is surprising given the quality of their latest offerings, despite their premium pricing. Even the original Claw wasn’t impressive, but the new versions are exceptional. However, they seem to provide little detail, not just to the public, but even to the press.
As a researcher, I’ve been fortunate enough to interact with the MSI Claw 8 AI+, but I must admit, securing this device for review has proven quite challenging. Frankly, I find myself puzzled about MSI’s current strategy with these products.
Let’s not overlook the fact that by the end of this year, both ASUS and Microsoft will introduce the Xbox ROG Ally X. This device, similar in hardware, is also on the horizon. If the rumored price for the Xbox Ally X, €899, proves to be accurate, MSI would likely need to adjust their Claw A8 pre-order prices accordingly, at the very least.
For US consumers, it’s important to be aware that there might always be potential tariff issues that could arise unexpectedly. Regardless, if you’re interested in purchasing one, you may need to save up extensively.
