As a huge movie fan, I’ve noticed something really cool: The Mummy and The Mummy Returns have actually grown in popularity over the last twenty years! They were already massive hits – making over $400 million each worldwide – but it’s amazing to see people still love them. And now, Universal seems to realize that, too! They’ve officially announced a new Mummy movie, and even better, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are coming back! It’s such exciting news for anyone who grew up with those films.
The next Mummy movie is scheduled to come out in 2028, and while fans are calling it Mummy 4 (as a sequel to 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), the filmmakers have clarified its place in the series. The previous film was met with some criticism because Rachel Weisz didn’t appear in it. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have now confirmed that Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is no longer considered part of the official storyline, with Gillett stating that Rachel Weisz’s return in the new film makes that clear.
The Mummy 4 May Technically be The Mummy 3 Now After Director Update

The upcoming Mummy 4 isn’t the first time filmmakers have tried to recapture the magic of the original movies. Back in 2008, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was a similar attempt to revive the series. That film replaced Rachel Weisz with Maria Bello, and Weisz explained she didn’t return due to concerns about the script and the recent birth of her son. Now, with Weisz back for the new sequel, the filmmakers are optimistic about the direction the story is taking.
Bettinelli-Olpin believes Brendan and Rachel will only join the project if they truly connect with the script, and initial reactions suggest they did. He also confirmed it’s a strong script and will be a lot of fun to film.
By removing Tomb of the Dragon Emperor from the official storyline – a film many fans didn’t consider a core part of the series anyway – the franchise avoids being weighed down by a poorly-received movie (it currently has a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). However, The Mummy 4 risks falling into a rare pitfall: repeating itself by disregarding a previous installment. Tomb of the Dragon Emperor showed Rick O’Connell retired from adventure, his wife Evie writing adventure novels, and their son Alex following in his father’s footsteps as an archaeologist. While the new film’s details might differ, hopefully it will find a fresh approach and avoid simply retreading old ground.
I’ve been following news about the new Mummy movie, and I’ve noticed one important character hasn’t been talked about much: Alex O’Connell. He’s Rick and Evie’s son, and we first met him in The Mummy Returns, with Luke Ford taking over the role later in Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. I’m really hoping they don’t do what happened with Mutt Williams in the latest Indiana Jones film and just quietly write him out – it would be great to see what Alex is up to!
The Mummy 4 will hit theaters on May 19, 2028.
