As a movie critic with a penchant for horror and a soft spot for the revival of classic film franchises, I must say I find myself pleasantly intrigued by the news of the Mummy reboot. Having had the pleasure of witnessing the splendid Evil Dead Rise under the masterful hand of Lee Cronin, I’m confident that this reimagining could potentially breathe new life into the Universal Monster-verse.
Initially, Brendan Fraser’s trilogy with The Mummy was followed by Tom Cruise’s 2017 action film and the aspiration for a Universal Monster-verse. However, these plans seemed to fail miserably. But now, there are reports of a Mummy reboot that looks much more promising.
The primary cause of our heightened optimism lies in the fact that acclaimed writer-director Lee Cronin is at the helm of this project, having delivered the highly successful ‘Evil Dead Rise’. He will once again write and direct this upcoming release, scheduled for April 17th, 2026. In a statement, he described it as an “unlike any Mummy movie you’ve seen before”. He promises to delve deep into the earth to unearth something extremely ancient and terrifying.
In collaboration, James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster and Blumhouse Productions are jointly financing the reboot of The Mummy. Both Wan and Jason Blum will serve as producers on this project. Notably, Blumhouse has had success in modernizing iconic horror characters from Universal’s film library, with productions like “Invisible Man” and the upcoming “Wolfman,” both written and directed by Lee Whannell.
