This weekend sees the release of the long-awaited remake of “The Naked Gun” featuring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson. With an impressive 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the action-comedy directed by Akiva Schaffer is this summer’s hottest movie ticket. However, fans eager to revisit the original films might find themselves pleasantly surprised!
You can now stream the original “The Naked Gun” trilogy from the ’80s and ’90s without having to pay for a subscription. “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!” (1988), “The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear” (1991), and “Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult” (1994) are all available on Pluto TV, Paramount’s free ad-supported streaming service. This is perfect timing as the reboot’s premiere approaches!
The “Naked Gun” movie franchise traces back to the ’80s spoof series “Police Squad!”, produced by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker. Leslie Nielsen first portrayed Franklin “Frank” Drebin in this show, which aired for only one season on ABC in 1982. Over five years later, Nielsen returned to the character of the hapless detective who often causes more mischief than help, particularly when he tries to thwart an assassination attempt on Queen Elizabeth II in a movie that garnered much acclaim and humor for its rapid-fire slapstick comedy, rich with both visual and verbal jokes.
Three years after the initial movie, which garnered high praise from both critics and audiences (boasting an 88% and 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes), a sequel titled “The Smell of Fear” was released. Another film appeared in 1994 as well.
Despite the enduring success and cultural impact of the “The Naked Gun” franchise, it had remained dormant until recently when news broke about a fourth installment being planned. Now, “The Naked Gun” has hit theaters, featuring Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Nielsen’s character. As he follows in his father’s footsteps, Frank aims to save the police department by solving a fresh murder mystery. The movie is garnering acclaim from critics and audiences alike for its impressive cast performances and its ability to recreate the humor seen in the original films.
