Just when you thought the world of The Lord of the Rings was finished, more stories are on the way! A new prequel, The Hunt for Gollum, is already being filmed, and this week brought exciting news: Stephen Colbert, host of Late Night, is writing a sequel called Shadow of the Past. Set fourteen years after Frodo leaves Middle-earth, the film follows Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they revisit their adventures from The Fellowship of the Ring, alongside new characters like Sam’s daughter, Elanor. The story will also flash back to reveal a previously untold story about a moment when the War of the Ring almost ended in defeat.
Dedicated fans of J.R.R. Tolkien are excited because the new work, Shadow of the Past, will include story elements from The Lord of the Rings that weren’t shown in the movies. Many viewers may not realize that this adaptation focuses on a chapter featuring some of the scariest creatures in Lord of the Rings history.
Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is Adapting a Freaky Horror Moment From the Books

Okay, so in Chapter 8 of The Lord of the Rings, titled “Fog on the Barrow-downs,” our four hobbit heroes – Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin – are really starting to feel the danger of their journey. They’ve already escaped the Black Riders by getting lost in the Old Forest and had a very strange encounter with Tom Bombadil. Now, they stumble into the Barrow-downs, which are basically ancient burial grounds. But these aren’t peaceful resting places; they’re haunted by these terrifying creatures called Barrow-wights. Think evil spirits possessing corpses and bringing the dead back to life – seriously creepy stuff. It’s a real turning point where the hobbits face a threat that’s less about being chased and more about a genuinely unsettling, supernatural danger.
The Barrow-downs had become the territory of the Barrow-wights, which the Hobbits unfortunately didn’t realize when they wandered into the misty, haunted hills and were captured. These creatures cast a spell over the Hobbits, but Frodo, aided by the power of the One Ring, broke free and summoned Tom Bombadil, who rescued them and equipped them better for their travels. The Hobbits then made their way to the town of Bree, where they encountered a mysterious Ranger named Strider, who was actually Aragorn.
The Barrow-wights first appeared in the second season of Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel, The Rings of Power, when a group of Elves accidentally entered their lands.
Why Shadow of the Past is the Right Time for the Barrow-downs Story

If you’ve seen the movie The Fellowship of the Ring, you’ll recall that the beginning quickly moves past the part where the four Hobbits first meet and experience various unusual and risky situations before encountering Strider. The filmmakers needed to speed up the story to reach the formation of the Fellowship, so they shortened the introduction of each character and how they came together as a group.
The new film, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, provides a great chance to finally explore the story of the “Fog of the Barrow-downs” on the big screen. Because the plot involves Sam, Pippin, and Merry looking back on their adventures (and remembering a lost friend), it naturally allows for a story that fills in gaps from Fellowship of the Ring. Rumors suggest the film will use flashbacks to show parts of Tolkien’s book that weren’t included in the original movie. This is a smart way to give fans the complete and faithful adaptation of The Lord of the Rings they’ve always hoped for.
