The Newest Movie in the G.I. Joe Franchise Gets Another Streaming Home

The movie “Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins” didn’t bring in big numbers for Paramount Pictures and Hasbro, raking in just $40 million at the global box office against a production budget of $88 million. Despite this financial setback, both parties appear determined to revive the G.I. Joe series. Now streaming on various platforms, the film offers a broader audience an opportunity to watch it and potentially boost enthusiasm for the upcoming G.I. Joe and Transformers collaboration hinted in the 2023 movie “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”. This spin-off could benefit from the support, as it managed to earn $441.65 million at the worldwide box office.

To generate more excitement, the newest G.I. Joe film, titled Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, has recently found another venue for streaming. Starring Henry Golding as the main character, Snake Eyes can now be streamed on Hulu. This addition brings the total number of platforms where the movie can be viewed to three. The film has been accessible on Netflix since last October, and on Paramount+ since September 2021, about forty-five days after its theater release. This latest streaming availability marks another platform for the less favorably received G.I. Joe movie, which currently holds a mediocre 35% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Before the release of “Snake Eyes”, there were two other live-action G.I. Joe films: “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” in 2009 and “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”. Critics weren’t fond of the first one, giving it a low rating of 33% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it did boast an impressive cast such as Christopher Eccleston as McCullen/Destro, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander, Sienna Miller as Ana/Baroness, Ray Park as Snake Eyes, and Channing Tatum as Duke. Despite the mixed reviews from critics, it was a success with audiences, grossing $302.46 million worldwide on a reported budget of $175 million.

As a movie critic, I’d say that stepping into the theater for “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” was an experience slightly more rewarding than its predecessor, raking in $375.7 million globally on a leaner budget of $130 million. Directed by Jon M. Chu and penned by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who also brought us the witty “Deadpool”, this sequel fell short among the critics, garnering just 29% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film boasted an impressive ensemble cast, with Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, Elodie Yung as Jinx, Adrianne Palicki as Jaye, Channing Tatum reprising his role as Duke, Ray Park as Snake Eyes, and the late, great Ray Stevenson portraying Firefly. Despite its disappointing critical reception, it was a spectacle to behold on the big screen.

The film “Snake Eyes” was intended to serve as a fresh start for the series, and while Samara Weaving hasn’t officially committed to appearing in the impending Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover, she has shown interest in being involved. At this point, Paramount and Hasbro haven’t found a director for the upcoming collaboration yet, but it’s anticipated that Derek Connolly will write the script. So far, Chris Hemsworth is the only cast member confirmed for the project.
