Star Trek is a hugely popular and enduring franchise, and 2026 is already shaping up to be a fantastic year for its fans. With the 60th anniversary of Star Trek being celebrated, there’s plenty to look forward to, including the fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the new game Star Trek: Voyager — Across the Unknown. A brand new Star Trek series has just been released, and it’s being hailed as the most exciting Trek release in years – and something truly different.
The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, is now available on Paramount+. This show represents a major change for Star Trek, as it focuses on a group of new Starfleet cadets – the first new class in over a century – rather than the adventures of a starship crew. As the 12th installment in the Star Trek franchise, and part of Alex Kurtzman’s expanding universe, new episodes will be released weekly until March 12th.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Is a Fresh, New Trek Perfect For New Audiences

Set over 300 years in the future, Starfleet Academy begins after a massive event called “The Burn” which severely harmed the galaxy and the Federation. The series follows the first new Starfleet cadets in over a century as they grow up and learn to become officers. They train aboard the USS Athena, a starship stationed at the Starfleet Academy in San Francisco.
Starfleet Academy is a great way to experience the world of Star Trek. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the series, the show offers something special. For those already familiar with Star Trek’s history and characters, it provides a deeper look at the training grounds of iconic figures like Kirk, Picard, and Janeway. New viewers will enjoy following the adventures of the cadets while also discovering nods to classic characters and moments that connect the show to the broader Star Trek universe fans have enjoyed for decades.
Balancing new ideas with the classic feel of Star Trek seems challenging, but critics have generally enjoyed the show so far. It’s too soon to say if it will remain popular, but early reviews praise it for being both innovative and staying true to its roots. One review from ComicBook gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars, comparing it to a Star Trek take on Hogwarts. Only time will tell how these new cadets do, but the show is off to a promising start, and a second season is already being made.
The first two episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy are available now on Paramount+. New episodes will be released every Thursday at 3 a.m. Eastern Time, and the season will conclude on March 12th.
