Okay, so Supergirl might not be the biggest superhero movie coming out, but honestly, I’m really hyped for it. After the DC Universe got a great start with Superman and the second season of Peacemaker, it’s awesome to see Kara Zor-El’s story finally getting its moment on the big screen. The teaser dropped back in December and it totally sold me – it looks like a really fun, action-packed space adventure with a lot of heart. And if that wasn’t enough to get you excited, there’s even more reason now why Supergirl is easily one of my most anticipated movies of 2026!
The official website for the upcoming Supergirl movie confirms that Tom Holkenborg, also known as Junkie XL, is creating the film’s musical score. He’s a well-known composer in the superhero genre, having previously scored films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zack Snyder’s Justice League from the DC Extended Universe, as well as Deadpool.
Junkie XL Is the Perfect Composer for the Supergirl Score
Ramin Djawadi was initially going to compose the music for Supergirl, but Junkie XL is a better fit for the project. Throughout his career, Junkie XL has become known for his unique style, which updates classic film scores with a modern feel. He often uses strong percussion and electronic sounds to make action scenes more exciting. Although he’s famous for working on large-scale blockbusters, he can also create moving music for more intimate, character-driven scenes.
Junkie XL’s skillset is a great match for the new Supergirl film, which is offering a fresh take on the superhero story. While Superman is more straightforward, Kara—Supergirl—is complex and flawed, and Junkie XL’s style seems to suit that perfectly. Superman had a powerful, anthemic song, but Supergirl feels more raw and unpredictable, with a chaotic energy throughout. A traditional orchestral score would likely feel out of place. The music for Supergirl should stand apart from Superman’s, emphasizing the unique personalities of these two Kryptonian cousins.
Music plays a crucial role in movies, powerfully shaping how we feel and the overall atmosphere. With composer Junkie XL creating the score for Supergirl, the film’s visuals and story of a determined, unconventional hero should be greatly enhanced. Early footage suggests there will be many exciting scenes where Holkenborg can showcase his talent for creating impactful action music, and it will be fascinating to hear the musical themes he develops for characters like Kara and Lobo.
The initial trailer for Supergirl used the song “Call Me” by Blondie. As the movie is being finalized, future promotional materials might include music from Junkie XL’s score. While that doesn’t always happen, it would be great to hear a preview of his work before the film comes out this summer. His music could be truly exceptional. For years, Superman has had a signature movie theme, and now Supergirl has the opportunity to have her own iconic musical cue that captures what makes her a fantastic hero.
