The Next Month Is Going To Be Amazing for Stephen King Fans (To Complete One of His Best Years Ever)

2025 has been an incredible year for Stephen King and his fans! He’s already given us a lot of new content, and there’s still more on the way in the next few weeks. This year saw the release of his newest crime novel, Never Flinch, which features the popular character Holly Gibney. Plus, fans enjoyed three well-received horror movies: The Monkey (February, 77% on Rotten Tomatoes), The Life of Chuck (June, 81%), and The Long Walk (September, 88%). In July, the streaming series adaptation of The Institute premiered on MGM+.

Good news for Stephen King fans – there’s still more to come this year! Here’s a preview of the two major releases we can expect from the master of horror in 2025.

The Running Man & It: Welcome to Derry Will Wrap Up 2025 for Stephen King Content

It’s been a fantastic year for Stephen King adaptations, with successful releases like The Monkey, the highly praised The Life of Chuck, and the long-awaited The Long Walk. And there’s more to come! Edgar Wright’s film, The Running Man, arrives in theaters on November 14th. Similar to The Long Walk, this movie is also based on a book King wrote under the name Richard Bachman.

Stephen King occasionally wrote under the name Richard Bachman to explore different genres, as he became known primarily for his horror novels. Two films were adapted from his Bachman books, including the 1987 movie The Running Man starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Now, director Edgar Wright (known for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) is revisiting the story for a new film, and King’s fans are hoping this version will be a more faithful adaptation of the original novel than the first movie was.

Okay, so if you were a fan of the It movies, you’ll be happy to hear there’s a new series coming! It’s called Welcome to Derry and it drops on HBO starting October 26th. It’s a prequel, basically showing us what happened the last time Pennywise terrorized Derry, way back in 1962. The story centers around a couple who move to town and their kid just vanishes – super creepy! As a huge Stephen King fan myself, I’m really excited to hear there are going to be tons of little nods to his other stories woven in. They even got Chris Chalk to play Dick Hallorann, the caretaker from The Shining! And the best part? Bill Skarsgård is back as Pennywise, so you know it’s going to be genuinely terrifying.

What Can Fans Expect from the Upcoming Stephen King Releases?

Of all the upcoming Stephen King adaptations, Edgar Wright’s take on The Running Man is generating the most buzz. While the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger has become a fan favorite, it’s quite different from King’s original story. Wright has a proven track record of honoring the source material he works with – his film Shaun of the Dead was so well-received by zombie genre pioneer George Romero that Romero invited Wright and actor Simon Pegg to collaborate on a future project. This suggests Wright will faithfully adapt The Running Man for the big screen, staying true to Stephen King’s vision.

The new version of The Running Man boasts a strong cast. Glen Powell steps into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s original role, and he’s a better fit for the relatable, everyday man from the book who faces incredible challenges. Josh Brolin plays the mastermind behind the games, and Colman Domingo, an Oscar nominee, takes on the role of the game show host previously played by Richard Dawson. With director Wright at the helm, this remake has the potential to surpass even the well-received Stephen King adaptations released earlier this year.

The new series Welcome to Derry is a fascinating project for Stephen King enthusiasts. Similar to Chapelwaite (which revisited the world of Salem’s Lot) and Castle Rock (focused on King’s famous town), this show explores a new story within the universe of It. The eight-episode series begins airing on October 26th and will run weekly through December 14th. With Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as Pennywise from Andy Muschietti’s films, 2025 is shaping up to be an incredible year for Stephen King fans.
