Though it was disappointing not to see Rose Larkin in season 3 of The Night Agent, her absence could actually set up a more compelling storyline for her character in the future. Rose, portrayed by Luciane Buchanan, was a key character alongside Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Gasso) during the show’s first two seasons. Given their romantic connection, many expected her to return. However, the new season premiered this year without Luciane Buchanan as Rose.

Before season 3 of The Night Agent began, Dichen Lachman, who plays Rose, announced she wouldn’t be returning. The show’s writers decided her character didn’t fit with the planned storyline for the new season. Creator Shawn Ryan explained he originally intended the show to feature a different story and cast each season. Both Ryan and Lachman have said they’d like to see Rose return in a future season, but it won’t happen right now.

It’s obvious Peter still has feelings for her, and she continues to motivate his actions, even when she’s not physically present. Rose Fell Apart As A Character In The Night Agent Season 2

Rose was a strong character in the first season of The Night Agent. Her intelligence and courage made her a good match for Peter, both as a partner and in a romantic sense. It was enjoyable seeing their relationship develop while they worked to uncover the season’s central mystery. Unfortunately, their connection didn’t work as well in the second season.

Okay, let’s talk about Rose. I really felt like she lost herself in season two. The whole season became focused on Peter’s journey – whether his questionable actions were justified by good intentions. And poor Rose? She just sort of… existed to move his story forward. It was frustrating because she was constantly reacting to Peter’s choices, being upset by them, but simultaneously being the reason he was making them, all in the name of protecting her. Honestly, the setup had potential to be compelling, but because the writers didn’t give Rose any real depth or growth, she ended up feeling less like a person and more like… well, just plain irritating.

Okay, let’s talk about The Night Agent. Season 2 really stumbled with the Peter and Rose dynamic – a lot of viewers, and the 39% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes proves it, felt it was frustrating. But it’s interesting – season 3 is way better, currently at 79%! It wasn’t that Rose was a poorly written character, exactly. The writers just… held her back, made her unnecessarily difficult. Thankfully, it looks like they’ve given her a chance to evolve, and it’s paying off. I’m glad to see them address this, because the potential was always there.

Rose Is In A Better Position To Return In Future Seasons Of The Night Agent

In season 2 of The Night Agent, Rose felt more like a plot device than a fully realized character, which made it hard to imagine where her story could go next. The show limited itself by tying her so closely to Peter. However, now that the series has shown Rose can operate independently, her future possibilities are much wider.

Season 2 of The Night Agent showed Rose dealing with the emotional aftermath of the previous season. It would have been unrealistic and unfair to subject her to more intense, violent storylines. Plus, continuing to focus solely on Peter protecting her wouldn’t have benefited his character’s development. Now that Rose and Peter have both found some independence, they’re in a much stronger position for a potential return, free from the unhealthy reliance they showed in season 2.

Rose could reappear in future seasons of The Night Agent, providing support and a personal connection for Peter while continuing to pursue her own goals. Although season two wasn’t kind to her character, she’s now positioned for a more positive storyline moving forward.
