The Night Manager season 2 cast: New and returning stars in BBC thriller

The BBC is starting the new year strong with the long-awaited second season of The Night Manager. Tom Hiddleston returns as Jonathan Pine, a skilled intelligence operative who excels at working undercover.

During the first season, his mission involved earning the confidence of Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), a very rich man who had made his fortune by illegally selling weapons to groups aiming to cause damage and unrest.

Angela Burr, despite facing long odds, successfully completed a dangerous operation. However, nearly ten years later, a new criminal is emerging who threatens to fill the power vacuum left by Roper in the illegal arms trade.

Jonathan faces the familiar challenge of going undercover and battling intense stress as he tries to dismantle yet another criminal organization. However, this time, it’s uncertain if he’ll succeed.

Season two of The Night Manager will feature several returning actors alongside Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Colman, such as Alistair Petrie (from Andor), Noah Jupe (from Hamnet), and Douglas Hodge (from The Great).

This new installment—the first not directly based on John le CarrĆ©’s books—features rising stars Diego Calva, known for his role in Babylon, and Camila Morrone, from Daisy Jones & The Six. Both actors will play key roles in Jonathan’s newest adventure.

Here’s what you need to know about the cast of The Night Manager season 2, as the popular spy thriller comes back to BBC One and iPlayer.

Tom Hiddleston plays Jonathan Pine aka Alex Goodwin

Jonathan Pine, also known as Alex Goodwin, is a former soldier who worked as a hotel night manager. In the first season, he began secretly providing information to British intelligence about some of the hotel’s questionable guests. Later, Angela Burr recruited him for a dangerous undercover mission: to infiltrate the organization of Richard Roper, a notorious arms dealer considered one of the world’s most dangerous men (played by Hugh Laurie).

Season 2 picks up nearly ten years after the events of a dangerous, but triumphant, operation. Now going by Alex Goodwin, Pine leads an MI6 intelligence team called the Night Owls. However, when a figure from his past resurfaces, he’s pulled back into the field for another intense mission. This time, he’ll be operating undercover as a daring and unpredictable financier named Matthew Ellis.

Tom Hiddleston described how Jonathan Pine’s ability to take on different identities revealed hidden parts of his personality. He suggested that beneath these disguises lay Pine’s genuine self.

Tom Hiddleston is famous for playing Loki, the God of Mischief, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s been in the Thor movies, The Avengers, and the Disney+ series Loki. He’s scheduled to play Loki again in the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday.

The actor is well-known for their work in films like Crimson Peak, Kong: Skull Island, and High-Rise. They’ve also appeared in several television series, including The Hollow Crown, Kenneth Branagh’s Wallander, and The Essex Serpent.

Olivia Colman plays Angela Burr

Angela Burr is a British civil servant who leads a small, often overlooked team within the Foreign Office – the International Enforcement Agency. Throughout the first season, she dedicates herself to stopping Richard Roper, driven by her strong moral objection to his practice of profiting from violence and the suffering of others.

Burr’s character was pregnant during the first season and has since left her dangerous job, likely to concentrate on her family. However, actress Jodie Comer will return to play the role in season two.

Colman described the relationship between Angela and Jonathan as a supportive friendship. They have each other’s backs, and Angela feels particularly responsible for Jonathan because she was the one who initially involved him in everything.

Olivia Colman is a highly acclaimed actress who began her career in comedy before achieving success in dramas like Broadchurch and The Crown. She’s known for her work in films such as The Lobster, The Favourite, The Father, and The Lost Daughter. More recently, she voiced a character in the animated film The Mitchells vs. The Machines and appeared in the Marvel series Secret Invasion on Disney+.

Diego Calva plays Teddy Dos Santos

Teddy Dos Santos is an illicit arms dealer who appears to have based his persona on Richard Roper, instantly raising suspicions for Jonathan.

According to Calva, the new season is full of heart and emotion. It’s more than just a suspenseful spy thriller; it’s a story centered on themes of betrayal and family. Specifically, it explores faith and hope through the character of Teddy, which Calva believes will resonate with viewers.

You might recognize Diego Calva from his roles in the Netflix series Narcos: Mexico and the movie Babylon, which features a large ensemble cast and is set during the beginning of Hollywood’s history.

Camila Morrone plays Roxana BolaƱos

Roxana BolaƱos owns a shipping business and finds herself involved with Jonathan and Teddy. The question is, whose side is she really on?

Morone described her character, Roxana, as surprisingly complex. While she might seem a certain way at first glance, Roxana is actually unpredictable, strong, and courageous. Her main priorities are protecting herself and her family.

People might easily see Roxana as a typical ‘femme fatale,’ but what makes her so compelling – and what I appreciate about David Farr’s writing – is that she’s no one’s pawn. She’s consistently the most intelligent person in any situation.

Besides her well-known roles, Camila Morrone has appeared in films like Bukowski, Death Wish, Never Goin’ Back, and Valley Girl. More recently, she played a leading role as Camila Dunne in the Prime Video musical series, Daisy Jones & The Six.

Noah Jupe plays Danny Roper

Danny Roper is the son of arms dealer Richard Roper. In the first season, British intelligence faked an attack on the Roper family, and Jonathan pretended to save Danny’s life. This allowed Jonathan to get close to Richard. While working undercover, Jonathan appeared to become fond of Danny, though ultimately his deception would lead to Richard’s downfall.

Years later, we’ll check in with Danny as he faces new challenges stemming from his father’s troubled past.

Jupe described how the person had experienced significant life changes, leaving Spain to return to London and losing contact with his father. This loss has left him with lingering questions and a deep sense of sadness that continues to affect him.

He’s struggling with growing up and figuring out his identity, and his father’s absence is making it harder. He tends to be pessimistic and see the worst in things.

Besides The Night Manager, Noah Jupe has been in several popular projects. He’s appeared in films like Ford v Ferrari and A Quiet Place, and the TV series The Undoing. He’s also starring in the upcoming film Hamnet, alongside Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, which is expected to be an awards contender.

Alistair Petrie plays Alexander ‘Sandy’ Langbourne

Alexander ‘Sandy’ Langbourne is a key character who was a close ally of Roper in the first season. Now that Roper’s operation has collapsed, it’s uncertain what will happen to him and how he’ll be affected.

I recently spoke with Petrie about what we can expect from season two, and they described it as genuinely captivating, but with a dark side. They hinted at a world of glamour and thrills, but one where everyone operates in a gray area, and where viewers should prepare to be both entertained and thoroughly disoriented. It sounds like they’re leaning into the morally complex aspects of the story, and I, for one, am intrigued.

Alistair Petrie is well-known for playing Michael Groff in Sex Education. He’s also appeared in a number of other TV shows, including Funny Woman, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?, Deep State, and Sherlock. On the big screen, he’s been in films like Rush and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and he even returned to the Star Wars universe to reprise his role in the series Andor.

Douglas Hodge plays Rex Mayhew

Rex Mayhew is a government official working in Whitehall. He quietly supported Angela Burr’s team, even when powerful people within the government tried to sabotage them for their own reasons. He remains an ally to Jonathan in season two.

Besides his current role, Douglas Hodge has appeared in several other TV shows, including Penny Dreadful, The Town on ITV, and the popular comedy-drama The Great. He also played Sir Robert Loxley in the 2010 film Robin Hood, starring alongside Russell Crowe.

Michael Nardone plays Frisky

Frisky is a ruthless enforcer who works for Richard Roper and will do whatever it takes to keep him safe. It’s safe to say he and Jonathan Pine have a very strained history and wouldn’t have a friendly meeting.

Michael Nardone has acted in several popular TV shows, such as Silent Witness, River City, Rome, Merlin, Doctors, Line of Duty, Shetland, This is England ’90, and Guilt. He’s also been in films including Rogue One, Dune, and Napoleon.

Indira Varma plays Mayra Cavendish

Mayra Cavendish is a high-ranking leader in British intelligence. She’s Jonathan’s supervisor and has the power to approve or shut down his Night Owls team’s missions.

Indira Varma is known for her roles in numerous TV shows and films. She’s appeared in popular series like Luther, Game of Thrones, Rome, Patrick Melrose, Carnival Row, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Capture, and Extrapolations, and has also been in the films Exodus: Gods and Kings and Official Secrets.

Paul Chahidi plays Basil

Who is Basil? Basil is another official in the British intelligence community.

You might know Paul Chahidi from recent roles in shows like Wicked Little Letters, The Serpent Queen, and This Country. In This Country, he played a caring vicar who kept an eye on the show’s mischievous young characters.

Hayley Squires as Sally

Sally is part of Jonathan’s secret ‘Night Owls’ team. They mainly focus on collecting information, rather than doing dangerous undercover operations.

Hayley Squires has appeared in several notable projects. You might recognize her from Steven Knight’s version of Great Expectations or the TV series The Essex Serpent. She’s also been in films like I, Daniel Blake, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, and Beau Is Afraid.

Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Dr Kim Saunders

Dr. Saunders is a psychiatrist who evaluates the mental well-being of British spies to determine if they’re able to continue their work. Although Jonathan appears calm, Dr. Saunders has some doubts about him.

Kirby Howell-Baptiste is known for her roles in several popular shows and films. Recently, she played Death in the Netflix series The Sandman and Dead Boy Detectives. She’s also appeared in Cruella, The Good Place, Killing Eve, Apple TV+’s Sugar, and HBO’s Barry.

The Night Manager season 1 is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
