Interestingly, the production of The Odyssey even impacted Marvel Studios’ plans for the next Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day, all stemming from Tom Holland’s involvement.
Tom Holland’s involvement in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey unexpectedly altered the schedule and approach to Brand New Day. Holland explained in a GQ interview that both films were originally slated to begin production at the same time. He contacted Sony Pictures head Tom Rothman to explore options, and Sony ultimately decided to delay Brand New Day to allow Holland to work on The Odyssey. Beyond the scheduling change, Holland also shared that he brought insights and techniques learned from Nolan’s film back to his work as Spider-Man.
Tom Holland Took A Chance: and It Paid Off For Spider-Man and The Odyssey
Tom Holland was eager to take on the role, but there was a scheduling conflict. The film was shooting simultaneously with his show, Brand New Day. As Holland explained to the director, Chris, he’d need to have a difficult conversation with Sony to make it work.
Holland would often reach out to Rothman and Marvel to resolve scheduling conflicts, and they ultimately agreed to delay the film’s production to allow him to star in The Odyssey. Holland feels this was due to both respect for him and, more importantly, director Christopher Nolan’s strong reputation for staying on schedule and within budget. He explained that Sony was likely more willing to accommodate the delay because of Nolan’s track record, stating that a different director might have resulted in a more difficult conversation.

You know, working with Christopher Nolan really shifted my perspective on Brand New Day. It helped me be much more assertive about what we wanted to achieve with the film. I realized we needed a solid reason for making another Spider-Man movie beyond just box office expectations and summer fun. We needed to really define why this story deserved to be told. Destin Daniel Cretton was amazing at helping me with that, and it felt good to be able to confidently talk to the studio – and people like Amy Pascal and Rachel O’Connor, who I adore – and say, ‘Chris is approaching it this way, and here’s how I think we should go about it.’
The delay in the filming schedule allowed them to secure Destin Daniel Cretton as the director, which Tom Holland believes was crucial to the film’s success. He explained that without the extra time, Cretton wouldn’t have been available, and they wouldn’t have had the six months needed to fully develop the script. Holland is confident they’ve created the best Spider-Man movie yet, and while Sony initially found the delay difficult, he believes they now appreciate how it ultimately benefited the film.
Both The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are scheduled for release in July 2026. The Odyssey will be in theaters starting July 17th, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31st.
