With Resident Evil Requiem celebrating the franchise’s 30th anniversary and leaning heavily into classic elements, Capcom is now making the original PC versions of Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3 available on Steam. You can purchase each game for $4.99 through Good Old Games until April 15th.
The original Resident Evil is a classic, putting players in the roles of Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield as they investigate a horrifying event that nearly wipes out their team. Resident Evil 2 introduces Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, thrusting them into a terrifying adventure in Raccoon City with consequences that haunt Leon for years, culminating in Requiem where he finally uncovers the truth behind the city’s destruction. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis returns the focus to Jill, who desperately tries to escape the city as the full extent of Umbrella Corporation’s sinister actions is revealed.
These games have fantastic titles – so much so that a couple of successful remakes were made! But the original versions are truly special, and at this price, they’re an incredible deal. If a particular story catches your eye, you might want to start with that one. It’s always rewarding to revisit the beginning, something the game Requiem explored beautifully in its story.
If those games don’t appeal to you, consider Breath of Fire 4, a truly excellent role-playing game. However, the first four titles all use a DRM system called Enigma Protector. Thankfully, the GOG versions don’t have it, and it seems to cause performance issues on the Steam Deck, so be aware of that before you start playing.
