In the 21st century, two iconic sci-fi series from the 1980s are experiencing a resurgence. Notably, the Predator franchise has made a comeback with a critically acclaimed animated movie titled “Predator: Killer of Killers,” released in 2025, and is set to continue with “Predator: Badlands” directed by Dan Trachtenberg. Meanwhile, the success of “Alien: Romulus” has prompted Xenomorphs to venture into television with the FX series “Alien: Earth.” Set a few years prior to the original film, the show is being overseen by Noah Hawley as showrunner, while Ridley Scott returns as executive producer. Unable to keep away from his creation, Scott echoes the sentiments of another significant figure in sci-fi cinema.
James Cameron is diligently preparing for the release of the third ‘Avatar’ movie titled ‘Fire and Ash’, scheduled for December 2025. The anticipation has grown significantly following the success of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, which seemed to validate the decade-long delay between films. Interestingly, Cameron also has another long-standing franchise on his plate, one he’s been involved with more extensively than ‘Avatar’, suggesting that he might be fully committed to this project, whatever the outcome may be.
James Cameron Is Supposed to Be Writing a New Terminator Movie

It’s fair to assert that the quality of the Terminator series has noticeably declined since James Cameron departed from its production. However, it’s worth noting that he was instrumental in directing and co-writing the first two films, which revolutionized the science fiction genre with their insightful commentary on artificial intelligence and captivating narrative. A number of behind-the-scenes conflicts led to Cameron leaving the series, but the Terminator movies continued to be produced. The subsequent three installments fell short of replicating the success of the initial two, often struggling to rise above being mere generic sci-fi films benefiting from a familiar title. Eventually, fan demand and dissatisfaction with the direction of the franchise prompted Cameron’s return for the sixth film, Terminator: Dark Fate, where he took on writing and production duties once again.
Although the film “Dark Fate” didn’t draw a large audience, it managed to recapture some of the original charm. Indeed, James Cameron has announced plans to write the script for the next “Terminator” movie, but updates since then have been minimal. Interestingly, Cameron revealed that he’s finding it challenging to start the story due to modern technology now matching the problems he initially envisioned in the ’80s. Given that AI is a common aspect of daily life and much of what the “Terminator” series portrayed is already known, Cameron is focusing his efforts on other projects.
Projects Are Lining Up for James Cameron That Have Nothing to Do With Terminator

Many production companies often struggle to envision a story extending beyond three films, finding it challenging to imagine enough content for more. However, James Cameron, known for his unconventional approach, is planning to push boundaries with his Avatar series, which will span five movies, the last one due in 2031. Given that each Avatar film consistently earns over $1 billion at the box office, it’s difficult to imagine Cameron taking a substantial break for something as emotionally demanding as writing a Terminator script. Yet, he is also working on other projects, such as a film about the atomic bombings during World War II and an adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s best-selling novel The First Law: The Blade Itself, known as The Devils in some regions.
James Cameron hasn’t explicitly said he’s ready to pass on his responsibilities for the Terminator franchise yet. He seems open to the possibility that a fresh idea might strike him within the next couple of years. However, it appears that the Terminator series could be temporarily put aside, and this might not be a bad thing. If a skilled filmmaker like Cameron feels that the creative well has run dry, then there’s little point in continuing with the project at this time.
