Star Trek is a well-known and popular franchise with many successful TV shows and movies. But not everything the franchise has produced has been a hit. Some shows were cancelled before their time, and others simply weren’t very good. One long-time Star Trek actor is especially frustrated about projects that ended too soon and isn’t shy about sharing their opinion!
Kate Mulgrew is well known for playing Captain Kathryn Janeway in *Star Trek: Voyager* (1995-2001), and she later returned to the role for the animated series *Star Trek: Prodigy*. Unfortunately, *Prodigy* only lasted one season on Paramount+, with its 20 episodes released in two parts over more than a year (2021-2022). The show was initially canceled due to low viewership, but Netflix revived it, releasing all 20 episodes of Season 2 at once last summer. Sadly, Netflix then canceled the series again, this time permanently.

I was really bummed to hear Kate Mulgrew talk about how Star Trek: Prodigy ended. She was at a convention in New Jersey (as reported by Trek Movie) and she didn’t hold back about being disappointed and frustrated with Netflix’s decision. It’s tough to hear when something you’re passionate about gets cut short like that, and she definitely made that clear.
Kate Mulgrew expressed her strong affection for *Prodigy*, telling the audience it was a brilliant show. She then revealed her frustration with its cancellation, saying she was “really furious” about the decision. She explained that it’s disheartening when a project you’ve dedicated yourself to is simply dropped, especially considering the show’s popularity. Mulgrew wondered why something so beloved and educational was put on hold, when it had the potential to inspire generations and connect families. She felt the reason was simply that the universe often operates in ways that are too complex to understand, leaving her feeling “mad.”
Many Star Trek fans were disappointed when *Prodigy* was canceled. The show had started to gain popularity on Netflix, and most people expected Netflix to fund another season – as they often do – to create a complete three-season arc. This would have allowed Season 3 to be marketed and released soon after Season 2, helping to build a stronger and more consistent fanbase.
The recent merger between Paramount and Skydance Media has significantly impacted the future of Star Trek. The expansion of Star Trek shows on Paramount+ during the streaming boom is now being scaled back, with several series like *Discovery*, *Picard*, *Lower Decks*, and *Prodigy* recently canceled. While *Strange New Worlds* has one season remaining, and a new series, *Starfleet Academy*, is planned, their long-term survival isn’t guaranteed. A major reboot of Star Trek is expected across both film and television in the coming years, but the animated series *Prodigy* will not be included in this new direction.
You can no longer stream Star Trek: Prodigy on Netflix, due to liscensing issues.
