After 50 years, the Japanese show Super Sentai – the original series that inspired Power Rangers – is ending. Power Rangers itself is also undergoing changes, with a new version planned for Disney+, though details are still unclear. Despite the Power Rangers reboot, the long-running Super Sentai series, which has been consistently popular, is now also coming to an end.

After rumors surfaced earlier this month suggesting the show’s end, TV Asahi’s president has now confirmed that the long-running Super Sentai series will conclude after its current installment, No.1 Sentai Gozyuger. This marks the end of a 50-year run for the 49-series franchise, as reported by Livedoor.

What Is Super Sentai?

I remember first discovering Super Sentai – it’s a long-running special effects series from Toei in Japan, starting back in 1975 with Himitsu Sentai Goranger. It became incredibly popular, and eventually, they brought it to American audiences with new scenes and turned Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger into Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Both shows did really well, and that success helped Super Sentai evolve. Over the years, we saw many Power Rangers seasons based on different Super Sentai series, but it looks like that era is coming to a close now.

The president of TV Asahi explained that they saw the 50th anniversary of Super Sentai as a chance to revitalize their Tokusatsu projects and introduce a fresh type of hero. When questioned about a potential new Super Sentai series in the future, the president acknowledged it was possible, but stated there are no concrete plans at this time. Therefore, fans of Super Sentai should stay tuned for updates on the current series to see how things develop.

What’s Coming After Super Sentai?

Following the cancellation of the long-running Super Sentai after 50 years, Toei has revealed its next major series: a reboot of the classic Space Sheriff Gavan. Officially titled Super Space Sheriff Gavan Infinity, the new show doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, but it’s expected to air in the same time slot previously held by Super Sentai, likely premiering shortly after Super Sentai concludes next year.

It’s a difficult moment for fans of both Power Rangers and Super Sentai, as it appears both shows have concluded their runs after three decades. However, there’s a positive side: future seasons of Power Rangers won’t simply reuse footage from the Japanese Super Sentai series. Instead, the show will be completely reimagined and built from scratch.
