It’s been nearly four years since Season 3 of The Orville finished airing, and fans haven’t seen anything new since. While creator Seth MacFarlane assured everyone the show wasn’t cancelled, a fourth season never came to fruition, leaving longtime sci-fi fans wondering what happened. Recently, while promoting Season 2 of Ted, MacFarlane shared some encouraging news about the possibility of The Orville returning.
Seth MacFarlane recently shared with The Hollywood Reporter that Season 4 of The Orville is already written, although coordinating everyone’s schedules for filming could be tricky. Now, Scott Grimes, who plays Lieutenant Gordon Malloy on the show (and Matty Bennet in Ted), has spoken to ComicBook about its potential return. He’s very optimistic, stating he’d immediately join the production if it were announced, and believes the show isn’t finished at all.
The Orville Season 4 Progress Explained

We recently asked Seth MacFarlane about updates on The Orville, and then spoke with his partner, Grimes, who had just spoken with MacFarlane himself. Grimes seemed surprised to have news: MacFarlane had just confirmed they were now able to share that the scripts for the show are finished. While this doesn’t guarantee the show will happen, everyone involved is eager to move forward, and having the scripts written is a positive step.
We’re making good progress, but don’t expect to see results immediately just because the scripts are finished. The delay is due to Seth MacFarlane’s schedule – he’s prioritizing other projects right now. As soon as he has time, we can start working on this right away. He confirmed the scripts are all ready to go, he just needs to dedicate the necessary time.
Seth MacFarlane is expanding his work beyond his popular animated shows. In addition to continuing his animated empire, he recently executive produced a remake of The Burbs, with a possible second installment in the works, and is developing an animated sequel series to Ted. Already voicing multiple main characters across three animated series – Ted, Family Guy (as Stewie and Brian), and American Dad (as Roger and Stan) – he’s also committed to a ten-episode season of The Orville. It’s a demanding schedule, and fans are eager to see these projects come to fruition, as it’s been a long wait.
