Approaching the October 29 launch of “The Outer Worlds 2“, its creative lead Leonard Boyarsky has disclosed that Fallout creator Tim Cain is contributing significantly to the game’s development. In an interview with Edge Magazine, as reported by GamesRadar, Boyarsky shared that Cain expressed his aspirations for The Outer Worlds series, and they both had designs for a potential sequel to expand “much more expansively and intensely”.
Boyarsky shared that in creating the original “The Outer Worlds”, they controlled a smaller portion of the world. However, if given the chance to develop a sequel, he aimed for a larger and more immersive experience due to the limitations in size and resources during the initial game’s creation. The decisions made then were focused on making things more concise. According to him, “The Outer Worlds 2” fulfills the vision they had from the start of the first game.
As a dedicated fan, I can share that Boyarsky emphasized the importance of keeping the narrative engaging by focusing on its rhythm, yet avoiding letting it overshadow the experience players will savor as they immerse themselves in the game world. Even with advancements in technology since the launch of the initial game, he insists that the ultimate goal is for players to enjoy their character’s journey without the story becoming a hindrance.
In his explanation, he emphasized that for him, the core elements have always been the storyline, the setting, and the plot development. He believes it’s crucial for these elements not to hinder the player’s enjoyment with their character in the game. Regarding technology, he maintains that this perspective doesn’t shift.
In alignment with this, the creative director, Brandon Adler, discussed providing a significant amount of flexibility for players when it came to shaping their character’s build and gameplay style. Highlighting the intricate systems that would be involved in an RPG of such magnitude, he stated that players would have the ability to customize their characters according to their preferences.
Adler mentioned if you’re fond of stealth, you’ll find plenty to delve into,” he continued, adding that “if you enjoy combat, your focus is on destroying things, then stealth isn’t an issue for you. He emphasized that our aim is to offer multiple approaches to the content, but for that, it’s important to ensure that it starts off being easy to understand and gradually becomes complex.
Previously, Adler pointed out that in The Outer Worlds 2, there won’t be an option for players to reassign their character traits or skills (respec). This design choice, according to him, underscores the importance of the choices players make when customizing their characters.
In Adler’s words, “There are many instances where games offer unlimited character re-spec options, and in those cases, I don’t truly feel like I’m embodying a character because I’m constantly switching roles – for example, my character might be an excellent long-range sniper assassin one moment, but then suddenly become a charismatic speaker, only to change again. For me, it’s not necessarily a mistake that some players enjoy this style of play.
The sequel to ‘The Outer Worlds’ is set for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Interestingly, the physical copies of the games for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S might contain the game data directly on the disc.
