Over the next few weeks, several new games will be released for Xbox, including the highly anticipated The Outer Worlds 2 from Obsidian Entertainment.
Recently, the game’s directors shared insights into their development process and how they’re working with other Xbox game studios – not only on The Outer Worlds 2, but also on projects planned for the future.
In an interview on the Xbox Expansion Pass podcast, Obsidian Entertainment’s Brandon Adler and Matt Singh explained that they’re actively encouraged to collaborate and learn from other Xbox teams.
“Matt recently contacted Ninja Theory because we’re really interested in their motion capture and performance capture techniques – we want to understand their entire process,” Adler said.
Now that we’re part of Xbox, we’re really encouraged to connect with and learn from other studios.

The team has been collaborating with other studios, sharing knowledge and getting valuable insights into creating engaging conversations and cinematic experiences for games. Being part of Xbox allows them to easily connect with studios like Double Fine and Kojima Productions. They’ve not only been receiving advice, but also offering their own expertise, particularly after a recent trip to Japan where they spoke with Kojima Productions. This collaborative environment is a key benefit of being within the Xbox family, encouraging open communication and mutual learning.
When I recently played an early version of The Outer Worlds 2, the game’s creative director, Adler, told me the team consulted with Halo Studios (previously known as 343 Industries) to refine the shooting mechanics. He mentioned this again in a new interview. I find it really interesting to hear how different game studios help each other improve by sharing feedback and offering fresh perspectives.
A banner year for Obsidian Entertainment

Despite a busy year for Xbox games, Obsidian Entertainment is making a big impact with plans to release three titles in 2025. They started with *Avowed*, a fantasy RPG set in the world of *Pillars of Eternity*, and quickly followed with the early access launch of *Grounded 2* just weeks after its announcement.
Completing the trio is *The Outer Worlds 2*, which is scheduled to release on October 29, 2025 (October 24 for those who purchase the Premium Edition). It will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (through Battle.net, Steam, and Xbox on PC), and PlayStation 5. As with other first-party Xbox games, the standard edition will be available on day one with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. After this busy year, I expect things to slow down a bit for Obsidian in 2026, but I’m still eager to see what their different teams are working on for the future.
