If you’re familiar with *Pillars of Eternity 1* and *2*, you might expect *The Outer Worlds 2* to build on those games in some way. But this new installment features a completely fresh setting, new companions, and new characters, and doesn’t reference anything that happened in the previous game – not even the different endings.
When Game Informer asked if choices made in the first game would affect the sequel, creative director Leonard Boyarsky explained that they wouldn’t, as the sequel takes place in a brand new location with a different colony.
The new area players can explore, Arcadia, feels isolated. While it connects to events from the original game, we don’t want players to expect a huge amount of detail. We’re simply continuing the overarching story of the game’s universe.
The new game includes nods to the original, offering a special experience for returning players. Those familiar with the first game will appreciate these hidden details, while new players might not notice them.
Director Brandon Adler explains that the team, led by Boyarsky and creative consultant Tim Cain, deliberately chose a new colony as the setting for this installment to allow for future stories. They also wanted to avoid establishing any single ending from the previous game as official, recognizing the many potential paths the series could take.
The highly anticipated game, *The Outer Worlds 2*, arrives on October 29th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. It will also be available with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscriptions. You can watch the newest gameplay trailer and find out about the game’s pet features here.
