So, The Outer Worlds 2 is coming out October 29th, and the devs are starting to share more about it. I just saw an interview with the game director, Brandon Adler, and he was talking about how they really want to deliver a more in-depth RPG experience. Apparently, they’ve been looking back at their own past RPGs – the ones everyone loved – for inspiration on how to make that happen. It sounds like they’re aiming for something really meaty and complex, which is awesome!
According to Adler, players are really craving more complex and immersive RPGs. He’s noticed a trend in the industry to simplify games and remove challenging elements, which works for some titles, but many players ultimately want a deeper, more involved experience.
Players want detailed stats and the freedom to create diverse character builds. They’re looking for the robust role-playing options we’ve sometimes simplified in the past. The key takeaway from the first game was that giving players more choices and deeper systems is something they really value.
According to Adler, the studio is drawing on its experience creating downloadable content for *Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire* and its broader history with RPGs to develop *The Outer Worlds 2*. They aim to recapture the feel of classic Obsidian games while updating the experience with modern features, ensuring it remains a strong RPG at its core.
This is the first time I’ve led the development of a large game like *The Outer Worlds 2*,” he said. I’ve directed smaller projects before, such as downloadable content for *Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire*, but this is a much bigger undertaking.
I’ve been really inspired by the older Obsidian games we used to make. We wanted to recapture that same feel – a strong RPG where player choices truly matter and have real consequences. Modernizing the style was important, but the core idea was to bring back that focus on player agency and make sure all our content supports that. It’s been a really enjoyable process.
Leonard Boyarsky, the creative lead, has said that *The Outer Worlds 2* is planned to be a larger and more complex game than the original *The Outer Worlds*. He described it as a more ambitious project overall.
When we made the first *Outer Worlds*, we created a compelling universe, but it was relatively limited in scope, explained Tim Boyarsky. He always envisioned a sequel that would be much more expansive and detailed. Because the original game had tighter time and budget constraints, they had to simplify and shorten many elements. *The Outer Worlds 2*, in many ways, fulfills the original creative vision they had when they first started developing the series.
The highly anticipated game, *The Outer Worlds 2*, will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Players on PC and Xbox can now begin downloading the game in preparation for launch.
