As a passionate comic book enthusiast and die-hard fan of the X-Men, I’ve been following the 2024 reboot titled “From the Ashes” with bated breath. While its reception has been mixed, one aspect that truly stands out is Gail Simone’s remarkable run on Uncanny X-Men. In the first issue itself, we were introduced to four teenage mutants searching for their place in the world. Fortuitously stumbling upon the X-Men, this group, calling themselves the Outliers, have been an integral part of the team since then. With issue 19 hitting the shelves now, the Outliers’ journey with the X-Men continues unabated.
However, as we delve deeper into their story, there remains a question lingering in the minds of fans – should they have already become full-fledged X-Men or will they join the team at some point in the future? Despite their immense potential, it seems somewhat unfortunate that they were not positioned to be the next generation of the New Mutants.
The students from “Exceptional X-Men” seem to resemble the New Mutants, but it might have been more fitting to call them the Outliers instead. Lately, they’ve been a popular choice among X-Men fans and for a good reason. Some even argue that they are the most impressive group of X-Men since “New X-Men.” However, perhaps we could have waited until they had reached a new pinnacle before making such a claim.
Carrying Their Legacy
Each new wave of X-Men readers consistently encounters fresh characters who embody the upcoming generation of heroic figures. This pattern dates back to the groundbreaking “Giant Sized X-Men.” These novel characters offer readers someone they can identify with. Furthermore, when “The New Mutants” emerged, their role wasn’t primarily as heroes, but rather as the next cohort of students. The exploration of their powers and team dynamics, as opposed to focusing on them individually, was the purpose of the New Mutants.
From the very beginning, Ransom led the team that was destined to become the next generation. Although they still hold onto that title, with the school closed and Rogue temporarily taking charge, there’s a sense of discomfort. The Outliers have had ample opportunities to excel, but the X-Men haven’t been given as much spotlight. It’s not a criticism, but one might wonder why they are called the Outliers if they resemble the New Mutants in essence.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel that the latest addition could have added a fresh and exciting dimension not only for the team itself, but also for the New Mutants brand as a whole. Don’t get me wrong, these characters are deeply cherished, but one would expect them to evolve their roster over time. After all, even the classics need their own spotlight. It almost seems like the Outliers were poised to take on the mantle of New Mutants and drive the storyline in a new direction. In my opinion, it just feels like a missed opportunity to revitalize the series and set it on an exciting new path.
Class in Session
As a film enthusiast, I’m truly captivated by the ongoing success of “The Outliers.” With their current momentum, they might well become the “New Mutants” once a fresh equilibrium is established. For now, with the school absent and the Uncanny team showing resistance, The Outliers lean on them for guidance. Their path ahead is undeniably tough in Louisiana, yet it’s not the Danger Room we know from comics. They possess remarkable potential and an intriguing ensemble of powers that cry out to be further delved into; it would be a pity not to unravel their stories more thoroughly.
In simpler terms, the storyline “Raid on Graymalkin” brought the Outliers and Scott’s team together in Alaska, but they were on opposite sides. If these teams reunite, the Outliers might not have to immediately become X-Men, which could save their lives. Although it’s typical for the X-Men to face death and resurrection, there’s no rush unless they won’t be coming back for a long time. For now, letting the Outliers be kids without constant danger is beneficial, given their young age.
Ever since they teamed up with Rogue’s group, it appears they won’t get a chance to join the New Mutants for a while. Currently, they are making quite an impact as impressive new characters in the X-Men comics, but many fans believe they would shine even brighter as members of the New Mutants team.
