In a recent interview, actor Domhnall Gleeson clarified that the standalone spin-off of the highly popular American sitcom “The Office,” which drew inspiration from its British counterpart, is distinct and self-contained from both of its predecessors.
Both editions of the show followed employees at two regular paper businesses – Wernham Hogg (Slough, Berkshire) and Dunder Mifflin (Scranton, Pennsylvania) – where unusual bosses frequently caused comical predicaments.
As an avid enthusiast, I find myself captivated by this spiritual sequel that centers around a fictitious local newspaper nestled in the heartland town of Toledo, Ohio. Eagerly stepping into the role as editor, the determined Ned Sampson (Gleeson) is on a mission to revive the luster and reputation this newspaper once held.
Ned appears to be significantly more rational and self-aware compared to characters like David Brent and Michael Scott, but the series does feature two characters who bear a striking resemblance to those problematic bosses – Tim Key’s Ken Davies and Sabrina Impacciatore’s Esmeralda Grand.
You can clearly see that these two characters and the actors portraying them are distinct, each bringing their unique touch. Furthermore, the humor in the respective shows varies significantly.
Gleeson added: “In much the same vein, it’s likely more akin to the tone of The Office (US) version.
I find it incredibly inspiring in numerous aspects, as it encourages perseverance amidst challenges, even when outcomes seem uncertain. It’s elements like these that give it unique strength and I hope they are what sets it apart.
This spin-off is crafted by the creator of The Office (US), Greg Daniels, in collaboration with Michael Koman, who’s known for Nathan for You. Joining them are Chelsea Frei from The Life List, Melvin Gregg from Snowfall, Gbemisola Ikumelo from Black Ops, and a returning cast member, Óscar Núñez, to complete the ensemble.
The Paper premieres on Sky Max and NOW on Friday 5th September 2025.
