Several films based on true World War II stories came out in 2025, and The Partisan is one of them. It tells the story of Krystyna Skarbek, a Polish agent who worked with the British Special Operations Executive, and was reportedly a favorite spy of Winston Churchill – and it’s easy to understand why. Known for her incredible bravery, she undertook numerous secret missions in Nazi-occupied France and Poland. The Partisan focuses on one particularly dangerous operation where she’s discovered and finds herself in a treacherous situation, forcing her to rely on her intelligence and resourcefulness to survive.
James Marquand, son of the director of films like ‘Return of the Jedi’ and ‘Eye of the Needle,’ directs and wrote this engaging story, casting Roman Polanski’s daughter, Morgane Polanski, as the central figure, Krystyna Skarbek. While Malcolm McDowell makes a brief appearance, the film primarily focuses on Skarbek and her dangerous missions. It’s a compelling story, but feels somewhat rushed; Skarbek’s remarkable life would have been better suited to a longer series, particularly as the film covers the quiet end of the war and her tragic final days. The DVD release of The Partisan is a bare-bones edition with absolutely no extra features. A director’s commentary or even a short documentary about Krystyna Skarbek, the film’s subject, would have been welcome additions. Ultimately, the lack of any bonus content makes this a disappointing release for home viewers.
We chatted to director James Marquand & actor Frederick Schmidt about the film…
