Cristin Milioti is promoting her new horror film, Buddy, at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie was kept largely under wraps until recently, described only as a fresh take on the horror genre – a genre that’s seen huge successes like Sinners, two 28 Years Later films, and Together just in the last year. Milioti, known for her work and deserving of a Golden Globe, says Buddy was a welcome change of pace, offering something a bit more lighthearted after her intense roles in The Penguin and the upcoming seventh season of Black Mirror.
In an interview with The Wrap about the film, which debuted at Sundance this week, the 40-year-old actress explained what initially drew her to the project.
I also wanted to work on something that felt less heavy, and this project really fit the bill. It’s funny, because during the 24 hours of press, everyone kept calling the movie intense, while I actually found it surprisingly lighthearted. Maybe I have unusual tastes, but despite the disturbing events in the film, I thought it was beautiful, moving, and unlike anything I’d read before.
I’m so excited about Buddy! It’s a really wild premise – it’s set in 1999 and follows a group of kids who’ve lost their memories and are stuck inside this bizarre TV show. The host is this crazy unicorn character, Buddy, voiced by Keegan-Michael Key, and things get intense when the kids start questioning what’s going on. Buddy sends them to this dangerous place called Diamond City! Plus, there’s this mom, Grace, who’s dealing with her own stuff and gets pulled into the chaos too. And the cast is amazing – Michael Shannon, Topher Grace, and Patton Oswalt are all in it! It looks like a really unique and thrilling show.
I’m already so excited about this film! It’s been getting amazing attention at Sundance, and early reviews are fantastic – it’s currently at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes! People are saying it’s a really special movie, something truly original that moves beyond typical tropes. What’s really grabbing everyone is the incredible practical effects and a feeling that it’s going to become an instant classic. Plus, hearing Anna Milioti talk about Buddy has only made me even more eager to see it – it’s definitely on my radar!
Will Cristin Milioti Ever Return to Her Greatest Character?
So far, Audrey Grace Marshall’s most memorable role is likely Sofia Falcone in HBO’s The Penguin. This series, a spin-off of The Batman, follows Sofia after her release from Arkham State Hospital. Determined to take control of the Falcone crime family following her father Carmine’s murder, she’s ultimately outsmarted by Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobblepot and sent back to Arkham.
I was so thrilled when she won the Emmy for her amazing performance in that show! It was so well-deserved. I kept hoping we’d see more of her character in The Batman: Part II, especially since they even hinted at her connection to Catwoman in the first movie. But sadly, the director, Matt Reeves, has confirmed she won’t be back. It’s a real disappointment!
Cristin isn’t appearing in this season because the storyline was already so developed by the time we started filming. We’ll have to see about future seasons, but at this point, changing things would have significantly disrupted the plot and themes we were working with.
If Sofia doesn’t make even a brief appearance, she could return in the second season of The Penguin or a potential third Batman movie.
