Horror fans had a fantastic September 2025, with many new scary movies becoming available on streaming services – and Paramount+ joined the fun just in time for Halloween! They regularly add new titles each month, and this month’s selection includes some truly great additions you won’t want to miss. Among the new movies is a monster film perfect for the whole family.
Fred Dekker’s 1987 film, *The Monster Squad*, initially a box office disappointment but now a beloved cult classic, began streaming on Paramount+ on September 1st. The movie features the classic Universal Monsters – Dracula, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Gill Man, and Frankenstein’s Monster – as they team up to find an ancient amulet that would give Dracula world domination. Luckily, a group of quirky, monster-loving kids is determined to protect their town and stop them.
Why You Should Watch The Monster Squad
When *The Monster Squad* came out in 1987, it wasn’t successful. It only made $3.8 million at the box office despite costing $14 million to produce, likely due to bad marketing and a strange release date. Critics and audiences didn’t love it either. But over the years, the movie has gained a following and become a cult favorite, making it a must-watch this Halloween.
At its heart, *The Monster Squad* is a fun tribute to classic Universal Monsters. It brings these iconic creatures to life in a lively ‘80s adventure, complete with impressive practical effects created by Stan Winston. The movie skillfully mixes horror and comedy into a charming story about growing up, and features a group of kids you’ll quickly find yourself cheering for. With a fantastic ‘80s soundtrack and a strong dose of nostalgia, *The Monster Squad* is a great introduction to the horror genre for both older kids and adults. While critics give it a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences clearly enjoy it, as evidenced by its 78% score on the Popcornmeter.
Other Horror Movies Now on Paramount+
Several horror movies, including *The Monster Squad*, became available on Paramount+ on September 1st, and many are suitable for younger viewers. *The Addams Family* and *Addams Family Values* are also now streaming and offer fun for the whole family.
If you’re looking for truly frightening movies, there are plenty to choose from! Several scary titles – including *I Know What You Did Last Summer*, multiple *Friday the 13th* films, *The Crow*, *The Last Exorcism Part II*, and *The Ring* – were recently added to the streaming service and are available now as part of its September 2025 content update.
