Playing Hades 2 on the Nintendo Switch is an amazing experience, especially for gaming on the go. Supergiant Games’ sequel is fantastic anywhere, but its 30-60 minute sessions and quick levels are perfect for commutes. Another great Switch title, Vampire Survivors, offers a similar addictive quality with fast-paced, bullet-hell action. And a new game coming soon looks to combine the best of both worlds, potentially offering Switch players hundreds of hours of gameplay.
The popular action game Achilles: Survivor, which came out earlier this year for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, has been a hit with players on Steam, quickly becoming a top auto-battler. Now, Dark Point Games is releasing the game on Nintendo Switch on October 30th, bringing the fast-paced action to even more players. If you enjoyed the ancient Greek setting of Hades 2, you’ll find a lot to love in Achilles: Survivor.
If you’re familiar with games like Vampire Survivors, you’ll quickly understand Achilles: Survivor. You choose to play as Achilles or one of 14 other legendary heroes, battling huge waves of enemies across four different areas in Greece. You control your character’s movement, but attacks happen automatically. As you play, you unlock weapons and abilities that give you more ways to defeat enemies.
While inspired by Vampire Survivors, Achilles: Survivor introduces some key changes, most notably the ability to build structures. These buildings aren’t just for show – some act as turrets to defend against enemies, while others provide helpful upgrades and stat boosts. This means you’ll need to think strategically about where you place your buildings, unlike the more free-roaming style of Vampire Survivors.
The game also features big boss enemies called Overlords. When these appear, you’ll face challenges similar to raid bosses in online games – lots of wide-area attacks and attacks that require you to learn their patterns. While other games inspired by Vampire Survivor have added similar bosses, Achilles: Survivor seems to do it better than most.
These battles are somewhat reminiscent of boss fights in Hades 2. While you don’t have quite the same precise control over attacks, Achilles successfully blends the fast-paced action of a ‘bullet heaven’ game with the style of an action roguelike. This creates a really satisfying and innovative take on the classic formula, offering a noticeable improvement and evolution.
The game Achilles: Survivor comes to Nintendo Switch on October 30th, but you can play it right now on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. If you enjoy Greek mythology games and want one for on-the-go gaming, this is a great choice.
