The action movie landscape was transformed over ten years ago with the release of John Wick. Though an unexpected return for Keanu Reeves, the film became a surprise success due to its straightforward but compelling story, imaginative world – similar to those found in comic books – and incredibly exciting action sequences. Its innovative use of gunplay, often called ‘gun fu,’ wowed both critics and audiences, and launched a major action franchise. Since then, three direct sequels – each more successful than the last – and a spin-off film, Ballerina, have been released. Thanks to the franchise’s popularity, John Wick is now arguably the role that Keanu Reeves is most known for, even more so than Neo.
The John Wick series was very successful for almost ten years, but recent performance suggests it might be losing momentum. The spin-off film, Ballerina, didn’t do well in theaters last summer, and it’s unclear how that will affect other planned spin-offs. While John Wick 5 has been announced, the ending of John Wick 4 requires the filmmakers to carefully develop the story before they can begin production. As fans wonder what’s next for John Wick, a new action franchise starring Henry Cavill, a reboot of Highlander, looks like a strong contender to take its place.
Henry Cavill’s Highlander Could Be the Next John Wick

Chad Stahelski, the director of all four John Wick films, is now planning the fifth installment while also focusing on a reboot of Highlander starring Henry Cavill. He believes Highlander could become the next major action series of its kind. Recent photos of Cavill as the lead character, Connor MacLeod, have been released and are generating excitement. The images have a similar visual style to the John Wick films – unsurprisingly, given Stahelski’s involvement – and suggest the new Highlander will be a visually impressive and immersive action experience.
While we haven’t seen Henry Cavill in action yet, Chad Stahelski’s previous work makes the new Highlander movie very promising. He revolutionized gunfight choreography in films, and now he’s aiming to do the same for sword fights. If he succeeds, action fans are in for something special. Stahelski’s experience as a stuntman and coordinator means he’s excellent at creating exciting action scenes, and he likely has some fantastic ideas for Highlander. Think of a thrilling sequence like the Red Circle shootout, but with Cavill using a sword instead of guns.
Henry Cavill is a big reason why a new Highlander movie is exciting. After becoming well-known for playing Superman, he’s a popular actor who could easily lead an action series. He has the right look and personality to be a great Highlander. Many believe Cavill didn’t get the chance he deserved with Superman, and Highlander could give him a defining role – much like John Wick did for Keanu Reeves.
Chad Stahelski has a bold plan for a new Highlander film, updating the story to take place in modern times. He pitched the idea to Henry Cavill by describing a character who’s a 500-year-old warrior, proficient in many forms of combat, opening up numerous possibilities for sequels if the movie succeeds. The Highlander franchise already has a deep history and mythology, and Stahelski seems to be reimagining it for today’s audiences. Hopefully, he’ll get the opportunity to develop this world further. Given his success with John Wick, Stahelski clearly understands how to create a compelling cinematic universe.
