Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Avatar: Fire & Ash
“Avatar: Fire & Ash” features some of the most spectacular and exciting scenes in the entire series. But, a particularly great moment involving Spider is easy to overlook in this new installment of James Cameron’s sci-fi saga.
Miles Socorro, also known as “Spider” (played by Jack Champion), has a significantly larger role and undergoes more noticeable changes in Avatar: Fire & Ash than he did in The Way of Water. However, one of the most interesting details about Spider in Fire & Ash is surprisingly understated.
Miles “Spider” Socorro Receives A Major Evolution in Avatar: Fire & Ash
In Fire & Ash, Kiri uses her special link to Eywa to connect Spider to Pandora’s life force through a unique fungal bond. This changes Spider’s body on a cellular level, allowing him to breathe the planet’s air naturally – a huge step toward feeling like he truly belongs. He even grows his own tsahaylu, a Na’vi braid, which lets him connect directly to Pandora’s network, just like the Na’vi people.
This change is a major event, impacting Spider – who grew up with the Na’vi – and all of humankind on Pandora. It’s especially important to the RDA, who try to understand and copy the process by taking Spider into custody.
Spider’s changes help him become even more accepted by the Na’vi, because he can now connect with Pandora’s creatures and, more importantly, with Eywa – the Na’vi’s spiritual network. However, a subtle but important detail about his transformation is easy to overlook.
One Perfect Spider Change Was One Of Fire & Ash’s Most Subtle
Earlier in the movie, Spider playfully teases Kiri about potentially making him taller, referencing the significant height difference between Na’vi and humans. This joke unexpectedly comes back into play during the third act of Fire & Ash.
Kiri attempts to connect with Eywa for help against the RDA, and Spider and Tuk assist her by linking their neural connections to prevent a seizure. During this brief connection, it’s shown that Spider has grown to be as tall as Kiri within the spirit realm.
It’s a small but enjoyable moment just before a major scene, where Kiri gets to see the Great Mother’s face for the first time.
As a big Spider-Man fan, I really loved how the movie wraps up with him truly becoming one of us. It was a neat touch seeing him finally ‘grow’ in the way he wanted to, even if it wasn’t about getting taller – it was about becoming a better person and connecting with everyone.
James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire & Ash is now playing in theaters.
