It’s unusual for an actor nominated for a Golden Globe to bring the award with them to the ceremony, but that’s exactly what happened with Noah Wyle. His 10-year-old daughter, Frances, worried he might not win, so she decided to ensure he had a prize! While waiting for their car, she gave him a homemade Golden Globe made of tin foil and tape, with a message at the bottom: “Noah Wyle: Best Dad.”
In the UK, Noah Wyle is probably still most famous for playing Dr. John Carter on the TV show ER. But that might change soon with his new show, The Pitt. This medical drama follows everything that happens at a Pittsburgh hospital over the course of a single day, showing events as they unfold in real time.
Originally released in the US last year, the show is now launching in the UK with the arrival of HBO Max. All episodes from the first season will be available starting Thursday, March 26th, and new episodes from season two will be released weekly.
Most TV shows don’t get this kind of attention – when the streaming service decides to base its entire European expansion around your series, you know it’s a success. That’s why actor Taylor Wyle is currently in his Berlin hotel room, a bit cramped in an undersized armchair, trying to process just how he landed this incredible opportunity.

After finishing his 254th and last episode of ER in 2009, Wyle didn’t think he’d ever wear scrubs again. So what brought him back? “That’s a good question,” he says, also noting that he’s now an executive producer on the show. The answer? A lot has changed.
Over the years, he divorced his first wife, makeup artist Tracy Warbin, and they share two children, Owen and Auden. In 2015, a year after marrying his current wife, actor Sara Wells, their daughter Frances was born. Despite consistent work in film and television, he struggled to escape being defined by his role in John Carter.
The Covid pandemic led him to consider the emotional toll emergency room work takes on its staff. While the hospital setting might seem typical, as actor Wyle explains, almost everything else about this story is different.
The central idea behind the show ‘The Pitt’ is that the doctor needs help more than his patients do. Dr. Robby should have retired a few years ago, and he’s still struggling with the death of his mentor, which happened exactly four years before the events of the first season. He’s experiencing exhaustion and trauma, but doesn’t realize it himself.
As a critic, I found the setup with Dr. Robby particularly compelling. He’s facing a tough anniversary, and honestly, you get the sense he just wants the day to go smoothly – especially because it’s also the first day for a new group of resident doctors, eager to learn from him. The show does a clever thing by giving us quick, almost fragmented glimpses into the personal lives of his team. These little snapshots hint at the deeper struggles they’re all dealing with, layered on top of the constant life-or-death situations they face every day. It really adds to the tension and makes you invested in these characters.
The series introduces Dr. Mel King, a dedicated doctor trying to hide her neurodiversity, which might actually be a strength. We also meet Dr. Heather Collins, who faces a personal medical crisis while on duty, and the combative intern Dr. Trinity Santos, who clashes with Dr. Frank Langdon. Adding to the mystery, Dr. Cassie McKay, a single mother, is seen wearing a police tracking tag – but why?
In the third episode of the first season, after new doctor Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell) experiences his first patient death, Dr. Robby tells him to accept it as a part of life, just like accepting your own mortality, and to try to find some balance. Whitaker asks if Robby has managed to do that himself, and Robby honestly admits he hasn’t come close.
After ten hours – and it’s wild because each episode of ‘The Pitt’ feels like it’s happening in real time, like we’re watching one incredibly long, brutal shift – we’ve already gotten a glimpse of what working in a trauma center really does to people. It’s clear why the staff have to build up walls to cope. When the first victims from a shooting at a music festival start arriving, it falls to the inexperienced Whitaker to try and reach Robby, who’s falling apart, and somehow find the right things to say.
Wyle is thrilled that Welsh actor Howell, who many American viewers recognize from his role alongside David Mitchell in Ludwig, has become so popular in the US. He praises Howell’s talent, saying that even a small suggestion can inspire a remarkable performance. Wyle first learned about Howell from his former ER co-star, George Clooney, who cast him in the Hulu series Catch-22. Wyle confirms he checked out Howell’s work before hiring him and that they’ve since become close friends.

Whether you’re a casual viewer or a dedicated fan, The Pitt offers something to enjoy. In the United States, medical professionals have praised it as the most authentic portrayal of an emergency room seen on television. According to actor Wyle, many experienced doctors have found the show deeply impactful, even unsettling, due to its realism. He notes it’s unusual for a show to honestly explore the emotional and personal costs of working in medicine.
You know a film really gets to people when you start hearing personal stories. For me, the moment came when I thought about my mom, Marjorie. She was a nurse working in East Hollywood, and after my parents split up in ’77, she raised my siblings and me. Thinking about her and how she handled things… that’s when I realized ‘The Pitt’ had truly resonated with audiences on a deeper level.
I was talking to my mom the other day, and I couldn’t believe it! I told her, ‘Mom, I spent fifteen years working on a medical drama, but you never shared any of these family stories with me!’ She just replied, ‘Well, that show wasn’t real life.’ And I said, ‘Neither is this story!’ She thought about it for a moment and then said, ‘It certainly felt real though.’

In a country where healthcare is a contentious political issue, Noah Wyle is pleased that the show ‘The Pitt’ is keeping the conversation going. He’s also incredibly proud that the ambitious gamble – reuniting with former ‘ER’ colleagues R Scott Gemmill and John Wells to create a show that could be even more popular – has succeeded. Like its first season, the show has been a huge hit in the United States. Wyle jokes that his wife finds his cautious pessimism amusing. ‘She calls me ‘The Awfuliser’ because I always expect the worst, and then I’m happily surprised when things turn out well.’
I mentioned to him that I’d seen the same cautiousness when he was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! after winning a Golden Globe. It seemed like he was hesitant to fully embrace the excitement, maybe because he didn’t want to feel sad when it was over. Wyle seemed to understand what I meant and nodded.
I get what you mean about that special feeling. It’s because those perfect moments don’t last forever, which is why I don’t enjoy birthdays – I don’t like feeling exceptional for just one day, only for it to be over. Winning an award is similar; it’s wonderful, but if you embrace that feeling of being special, it feels a little silly to admit you want to feel that way all the time.
As a movie fan, it’s amazing when someone you admire acknowledges you! I mean, imagine Leonardo DiCaprio giving you a genuine smile and making you feel like your appreciation matters. It’s a feeling I wouldn’t want to lose! Luckily for Noah Wyle – and whoever has to deal with his… unique home security needs – it doesn’t look like that moment is going anywhere soon.
