Please be aware that the following contains spoilers for episode 11 of The Pitt season 2, which hasn’t yet aired in the UK.
I’m so excited for Season 3 of The Pitt! Things are really starting to heat up with production, and we’re getting lots of updates from the cast. Just recently, Patrick Ball, who plays Dr. Langdon, shared some new info, which is awesome!
While talking to Deadline about the show, Ball was asked how he prepares for the time skips between seasons and remembers what’s happened to his character.
The show’s direction isn’t always clear from the start,” Ball explained. “We receive scripts individually, so right now, as we prepare for season 3 and production starts up again in a month, I’m discussing the plot with Scott Gemmill, the show’s creator.
I’m not sure what the season holds for us, but let’s start by reviewing what I’ve already done.

Ball discussed Langdon’s arc in the second season, explaining that he was working to repair the damage caused by his past behavior – specifically, stealing medicine because of his struggle with drug addiction.
He spent the season apologizing to many coworkers, but had difficulty reconciling with two in particular: his old mentor, Dr. Robby (played by Noah Wyle), and Dr. Santos (Isa Briones), who had revealed his struggle with drug addiction.
He believes his character, Langdon, returned at the start of season two aware of the pain he’d caused in his relationship with Dr. Robby. Langdon felt abandoned, but also recognized his own role in hurting Robby, and had spent the previous ten months working on taking responsibility for his actions.
He returned with a well-thought-out plan to apologize and try to repair their relationship, hoping to reconnect with Robby and revive their close mentorship. However, when he arrived, he quickly realized that Robby wasn’t receptive to his apology.
You know, as things unfolded, it really hit me that Robby wasn’t the man I’d built up in my head. I used to see him as this perfect role model, someone I genuinely admired and wanted to be like. But coming back, I was honestly a little hurt that he wouldn’t accept my apology. It just wasn’t the reunion I’d hoped for with the Robby I remembered.
It initially felt like I was desperately seeking his forgiveness, wondering why he seemed upset despite my acknowledging my mistakes. But as time passed, I realized his struggles weren’t related to me at all. I began to understand he wasn’t simply a part of my journey to feel better; he was also dealing with his own challenges and needed his own time to heal.
He may need support and understanding right now, instead of always being the one everyone else relies on for help and direction.

According to Dr. Ball, overcoming addiction is an ongoing process, not a quick fix. He explained that Langdon continues to struggle with lingering anxieties and bitterness towards the individual who caused him to lose his job and nearly destroyed his marriage.
In the eleventh episode of The Pitt’s second season, Langdon attempted to apologize to Santos, but she rejected it, arguing he hadn’t fully owned up to his actions because his drug theft from the hospital hadn’t been revealed publicly.
Ball explained that while a part of him acknowledges taking responsibility, another part feels deeply wronged. He described this other part as believing he nearly lost everything – his life, his wife, and his children.
I responded well during a major crisis, saving many lives. But afterwards, I was essentially ostracized – treated like an outcast by my wife, children, and colleagues, and lost the trust and respect of the community I’d worked so hard to build a good reputation within.
Recovering from something like this takes time and isn’t immediate. Langdon didn’t have a sudden realization or change overnight. He’ll still be flawed, as personal growth is an ongoing, lifelong process.
