It’s always disappointing when a video game is removed from digital stores, no matter the reason. Soon, two games will be taken down from a well-known PC gaming platform, including one that came before a major Xbox game planned for release in 2025.
Two games are involved: *Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey*, a survival game where you explore an open world, and *The Outer Worlds*, a story-driven sci-fi RPG that serves as a prequel to the upcoming *The Outer Worlds 2*. Both were published by Private Division, which used to be part of Take-Two Interactive but was sold off in 2024.
The games are being removed from GOG, a PC game store created by CD PROJEKT – the company behind popular titles like The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077. GOG is a well-known alternative to platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store, and it’s particularly liked by users because it doesn’t use DRM, which restricts how people use the games they buy.
GOG games don’t need a constant internet connection (except for games designed to be played online) and don’t require you to repeatedly verify ownership. This makes them really important for preserving games, as it means you can still enjoy them even if the game’s servers are no longer running.
It’s disappointing to learn that both Ancestors and The Outer Worlds will soon be removed from the GOG store. A GOG representative, king_kunat, shared the news on the GOG forums, stating that the games will no longer be available for purchase on the platform after December 15th.

We have some disappointing news: both *The Outer Worlds* and *Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey* will be removed from sale on December 15th (the exact time is still to be confirmed). We were able to offer a discount on *Ancestors*, but not on *The Outer Worlds*. This removal includes all versions of both games and any downloadable content. We’re working to bring them back in the future. This also applies to the 2023 *Spacer’s Choice Edition* of *The Outer Worlds*, which features updated graphics and includes all DLC, as well as the separate expansion packs.
Great news! You’ll still be able to buy and play both Ancestors and The Outer Worlds on Steam, the Epic Games Store, Xbox, and PlayStation. For The Outer Worlds, you can also enjoy it on the Xbox PC app and through an Xbox Game Pass subscription.
It’s really unfortunate that these games are being removed without a clear explanation, especially since they were DRM-free. It likely has to do with Private Division being sold to Haveli Investments last year, potentially causing issues with who has the rights to publish them. We’ve contacted Microsoft and Xbox, who now own Obsidian and the *Outer Worlds* series, to find out more.
Hopefully, GOG will be able to restore both games to the store soon. But if that doesn’t happen and you’d like to own them without DRM, be sure to purchase them before December 15th. Right now, Ancestors is heavily discounted on GOG for only $7.99 (originally $39.99), though The Outer Worlds remains at its regular price of $29.99, and the Spacer’s Choice Edition is still $59.99.
