In a league of its own when it comes to iconic cult classics, “The Princess Bride” has left an indelible mark on countless generations, with many instantly recognizing phrases like “My name is Inigo Montoya” and “Humperdinck.” Now, this timeless film is being reimagined as a musical adaptation, a project that’s been in the works since 2019. A recent interview with director Rob Reiner, who helmed the original movie and is also working on another beloved property, Spinal Tap II, sheds light on his feelings regarding potential remakes of the original film and its upcoming musical adaptation. It’s easy to see why these developments might give him pause.
When asked about remaking The Princess Bride as a possible musical, Reiner disclosed that he had been aware Disney held the rights for such an adaptation since he himself attempted to produce a musical rendition years ago. With the author’s approval, he hopes this new version excels but admits it does cause him some concern.
To be completely honest, I must admit that something from yesterday has been bothering me a bit. You see, Disney announced they will be producing a live theater musical, and this news is significant because I was aware of it. This knowledge came from the fact that I had previously met with them regarding this project, which dates back many years. At that time, Bill Goldman, who unfortunately passed away since then, was also on board with the idea of creating a stage musical.
I recently had discussions with Marc Shaiman, Randy Newman, and John Mayer, collaborators I’ve worked with for years. They all expressed their approval but also shared reservations about the project, finding it too something. As a result, it seems to have been put on hold. However, I learned yesterday that another team, led by the director of Hamilton and a few writers, are now working on it. While I hope it turns out well, I must admit I feel a bit uneasy because Bill Goldman’s ‘Fortress of Solitude’ was my favorite book he ever wrote, and I had a close relationship with him.
Initially encountering him, he warmly welcomed me at the door and expressed that “The Princess Bride” was his most cherished work, something he wished inscribed on his tombstone. He asked me what I planned to do with it, to which I responded I aimed to keep his book as authentic as possible – a goal we achieved. However, despite this close relationship, his passing still leaves me somewhat troubled. It’s not a significant concern, but it does bother me slightly. I hope the outcome is fantastic and I long for its success, yet this issue lingers in my mind to some extent.
For this specific version of the project, development began in 2019, and it’s exciting to consider if it might come to fruition now that a new creative team has been assigned (as reported by Deadline). This team includes Robert Lopez, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Alex Timbers, and Jeffrey Seller. Earlier, Disney Theatrical Productions and composer David Yazbek were associated with the project, but they are no longer involved. Bob Martin, Rick Elice, and music supervisor Tom Kitt remain part of the team.
