The Punisher Special Runtime Revealed & Disney+ Fans Will Be Happy

We’re getting a better idea of what to expect from Marvel’s upcoming Punisher special. New information has been released that clarifies a key question about the Disney+ project.

The Punisher Special’s runtime is longer than Guardians and Werewolf by Night

The new Punisher special is expected to be about an hour long, based on information from the Writers Guild of America.

According to the Writers Guild of America, this is a live-action series for Disney+ with each episode lasting around an hour. It’s classified as an action-adventure show and is based on Marvel Comics. Jon Bernthal and Reinaldo Marcus Green are credited as the writers.

Okay, so I’ve gotten a first look at the upcoming Punisher special for Disney+, and it’s shaping up to be something special. Reinaldo Marcus Green is directing, and interestingly, he co-wrote the script with Jon Bernthal himself – that’s a huge plus in my book! Marvel is billing this as their third ‘Special Presentation,’ meaning it’s fully connected to the existing MCU timeline. Basically, they’re picking up Frank Castle’s story after we last saw him in Daredevil and The Punisher, and continuing it within the larger Marvel universe. It feels like a natural progression for the character, and I’m cautiously optimistic about where they’re taking him.

Jon Bernthal is back as Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, and is joined by Jason R. Moore and Roe Rancell. Bernthal came up with the idea for this project while working on the ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ series, creating the storyline before pitching it to Marvel Studios. Filming took place in New York City over 12 days, starting in mid-July 2025 and finishing in early August.

The new Marvel Studios special is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in mid-2026 as part of Phase Six. Initially, it was expected to debut with the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, but Jon Bernthal has clarified it will likely be released around the same time as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, planned for July 2026 (according to Screen Rant).

Brad Winderbaum called the upcoming series a fast-paced and impactful story (according to Entertainment Weekly). Jon Bernthal, in a separate interview with EW, clarified it wouldn’t be a watered-down take on the Punisher, but rather a raw, intense, and deeply psychological portrayal of Frank Castle.
