The “Purge” series has grown into a worldwide sensation since its debut in 2013, spawning numerous sequels, venturing into television, theme parks, and essentially becoming synonymous with “social unrest.” Despite its underlying frightening concept, the creator of the franchise, James DeMonaco, revealed that Pete Davidson contributed to a film installment, adding more humor to the terrifying premise. However, the studios involved in the series are hesitant to delve into comedy at this time. In the interim, fans can catch DeMonaco and Davidson’s collaboration in the upcoming horror film “The Home“, set for release on July 25th.
Pete and his collaborator penned an outstanding script for a comical take on Purge, one I still firmly believe in as being side-splittingly funny. What made this adaptation unique was its blend of terror and humor, ensuring it retained the necessary tension, while also incorporating Pete and his friends into the film. DeMonaco affirmed this to ComicBook, mentioning that he attempted to get this version greenlit but faced some resistance. He hopes that eventually, they’ll be open to more installments, after which he aims to bring Pete’s vision to life, as it’s so amusing. Despite his desire for them to see it, the higher-ups were initially resistant to a comedic adaptation, but he believes they can change their minds over time.
In the initial movie, they presented a disturbing society where during a yearly 12-hour span called “The Purge,” all forms of crime were permitted in America to reduce violence. The sequels have shown different characters struggling through this dangerous setting. It’s plausible that a comedic adaptation could exaggerate the ridiculousness underlying the concept.
If this humorous portrayal were made real, it wouldn’t be unprecedented for a horror series to mix genres, as the film “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” featuring Chris Rock has already demonstrated a more comedic take within the gruesome realm, while maintaining the essential elements of the franchise.
While we anticipate news about the direction of “The Purge”, whether it leans towards Davidson’s comedic interpretation or a more serious approach, enthusiasts might want to explore “The Home” in the meantime.
In this horror-thriller produced by the creator of The Purge, a rebellious young adult is forced to do community service at a tranquil retirement home. The inhabitants on the fourth floor are strictly forbidden, with the ominous warning that they require ‘special care.’ As his suspicions intensify and he delves deeper, he stumbles upon a shocking secret that places both their lives and his own in grave peril.
The Home hits theaters on July 25th. Stay tuned for updates on the future of The Purge.
