The arrival of baby Emma in the eighth season finale significantly changed the dynamics among friends, and similarly affected Ross and Rachel. Over the course of the sitcom, the development of Ross and Rachel’s relationship stands out as a significant storyline, reaching a significant point when Rachel welcomed Emma into their lives.
Similar to numerous infants in sitcoms, the roles of Emma were filled by twin babies, who were initially played by Athena and Alexander Conley. Lately, they had an interview with People to share their experiences on the show, including why they eventually got replaced. The twins explained that they landed the part almost immediately following a friend of their family informing their mother about the audition.
Regrettably, baby Alexandra wasn’t quite cut out for Hollywood just yet. She admitted that her persistent crying posed a problem on set, and her sister couldn’t step in due to labor regulations. Despite being replaced by Noelle and Cali Sheldon, the Conleys bear no ill will. Here are their thoughts below:
Alexandra: Funny story, actually: they ended up replacing us because I did cry too much.
To comply with child labor regulations, they weren’t able to rely on a single set of twins throughout the series, so a new pair took over starting from Season 9.
Alexandra: My mom was happy to go [to set] because, I mean, it was Friends — the most iconic show.
During our conversation, she mentioned that every single cast member was incredibly kind and constantly amusing, making one-liners throughout. It seemed as though we were viewing the program itself, even during filming breaks.
What The Twins Getting Replaced Means For Their Thoughts On Friends
They Still Love The Sitcom
From their remarks, it appears that the Conley twins do not harbor any resentment towards the sitcom for letting them go after just 10 episodes. Since they were infants at the time and can’t recall the incident, it wasn’t until they grew older that they truly appreciated its impact. Given that ‘Friends’ isn’t particularly suitable for children, it wasn’t until their teenage years that they could fully understand its significance.
As a youngster, I naively assumed I was merely a recurring character on the beloved sitcom Friends. It wasn’t until my teenage years, possibly even the initial stages of high school, that the magnitude of my television presence truly dawned on me.
It astounds them greatly, given their brief appearance on such a widely recognized show, that the Conleys can experience “Friends” in an exceptional, distinct manner compared to typical fans. They not only shared their personal pleasure but also discussed why “Friends” continues to captivate newer generations. Athena, for instance, expressed this viewpoint.
I believe the reason the show remains impactful is that the characters seem familiar to us, making viewers feel as if they belong to the group, which adds a unique sense of connection“.
Our Take On Where The Original Emma(s) On Friends Are Now
They Seem To Be Living Their Best Lives
After their time on “Friends”, Alexandra and Athena Conley primarily focused on dance, filming advertisements, and these areas took precedence over further acting pursuits. They also earned their degrees from California Polytechnic State University, graduating in 2024.
Alexandra resides in California and works for a beauty company, managing social media and marketing efforts. Simultaneously, Athena calls Denver her home, where she is involved in finance. Although they didn’t grow up as Emma twins, they share a bond that transcends their past, often expressing it through shared posts about “Friends” on social platforms, one of which recently gained significant attention on TikTok.
