The design of lightsabers in Star Wars has significantly evolved since their introduction in 1977. Initially limited to two colors and a basic shape, the variety of appearances has expanded considerably. From double-bladed sabers, crossguard designs, spinning blades, even an umbrella-like version, the possibilities are almost endless. The spectrum of colors too has broadened, featuring green, yellow, orange, and more.
This evolution isn’t confined to just movies and TV shows; it extends across the broader Star Wars franchise as well. Customization of lightsabers has become a significant aspect, whether in video games or at Disney theme parks. This expansion is largely due to their captivating appeal, which exceeds the initial impression given by George Lucas‘ first installment in the saga. In essence, lightsabers have not only become iconic but also fun and intriguing beyond what was initially anticipated.
An essential component of it is Mace Windu’s distinctive purple lightsaber, which revolutionized the category of most stylish lightsabers in Star Wars films. The blade stood out instantly and became iconic, even though it deviated from what George Lucas had earlier established for Jedi, who were to have only blue or green sabers. And we owe that creative liberty to actor Samuel L. Jackson. In an interview on The Graham Norton Show, he disclosed: “Since there was this large arena and a fight scene with numerous Jedi, I thought it would be helpful if I could spot myself in this extensive scene. So, I asked George if maybe I could have a purple lightsaber.
What A Purple Lightsaber Means (It Was Perfect For Mace Windu)

In Jackson’s argument, despite Lucas’ insistence that Jedi didn’t wield purple lightsabers, he believed Mace Windu held the title of the second most powerful Jedi after Yoda. The actor’s persuasiveness led to this portrayal in Star Wars lore, and it seems fitting given Mace’s character and combat style. Purple, being a mix of red (representing the dark side) and blue (symbolizing the light), makes Mace’s lightsaber a symbol of balance. As a Jedi Master, Mace is well-aware of his inner struggles, creating his unique lightsaber form, Vaapad, which allows him to channel that dark energy.
In addition to the iconic Star Wars character Mace Windu, another notable figure is Darth Revan, whose story leans more towards Legends than canon. Initially a Jedi who succumbed to the dark side, he was later redeemed and possessed both red and purple lightsabers. It’s interesting to note that several other Jedi, both in canon and Legends, have used these colors without holding the same significance, particularly during the High Republic era. This is significant because these Jedi operated under a more lenient order compared to the strict one Mace Windu served in. One of the most noteworthy among them is Vernestra Rwoh, who transformed her lightsaber into a lightwhip and displayed a certain level of mystery and deception, as depicted in “The Acolyte.
Purple lightsabers are set to make a return, this time outside of canon, as part of the LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy: Pieces of the Past game. This version will see Revan, who is known for his dual-colored lightsabers, back in action. Additionally, the dark side villain Solitus will be introduced, wielding two interconnected purple sabers with a chain. While this may seem unusual for a purely dark side user to have purple weapons, it could hint at some goodness within him. This just goes to show that even the rare purple lightsaber continues to hold significance and a unique appeal, a legacy stemming from George Lucas’ desire to stand out.
