Raynor and Moth Winn’s memoir, The Salt Path, received widespread acclaim when it was published earlier this year. The book recounts the couple’s remarkable true story of walking the South West Coast Path in 2013.
The movie featured Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs and was generally well-received by critics. However, a report surfaced several months later that raised doubts about the accuracy of the story it told.
According to The Observer, Raynor Winn’s book and the subsequent film were based on false information and created out of a difficult situation. Winn has strongly refuted these claims, calling them deeply unfair.
Sky News has created a special documentary, based on the work of investigative journalist Chloe Hadjimatheou, to uncover the full story.
Hayley Reynolds, from Sky Documentaries, explained that the film combines excellent journalism and filmmaking to investigate a fascinating and recent literary success story in Britain, and the real story behind it.
Sky Documentaries loves telling stories that make you think and aren’t afraid to tackle tough issues. That’s why we’re thrilled to be working with The Observer again, especially with the talented team who created the award-winning film, Libby, Are You Home Yet?
Keep reading to learn more about the documentary and the claims it makes regarding the popular memoir and the movie based on it.
What are the allegations about The Salt Path?
In July 2025, The Observer published a report indicating that the real events inspiring the movie and book were more complicated than previously believed.
Journalist Chloe Hadjimatheou’s investigation revealed several inaccuracies in how the events were portrayed.
According to the article, Sally and Tim Walker – also known as the couple – lost their home after Sally was accused of stealing £64,000 from her workplace.
The couple reportedly took out loans to cover the money that was supposedly stolen, and ended up owing more than their house was worth.
I just read the article, and Raynor Winn has come out saying it’s really inaccurate. Her agents, Graham Maw Christie, put out a statement saying the report was “highly misleading,” which is pretty strong language, and makes me think there’s a lot more to this story.
It continued: “We are taking legal advice and won’t be making any further comment at this time.
In The Salt Path, we share the deeply personal story of our walk along the South West Coast Path – a journey that changed us both, inside and out, and ultimately reshaped our lives.
At the end of her statement, she added: “This is the true story of our journey.”
Winn responded to the accusations on her website, describing them as both unfair and misleading.
She posted pictures seemingly showing doctors discussing Moth’s diagnosis, and they described The Observer’s questioning of his illness as deeply upsetting.
She stated that the embezzlement reported in The Observer was different from the case that led to her and Moth losing their home. She also insisted that the story told in her book and the movie based on it was accurate.
A representative for the film companies, Number 9 Films and Shadowplay Features, stated to Deadline that they were unaware of any issues with the book when they acquired the rights to it or began making and releasing the movie.
The statement confirmed the film closely followed the original book, which they had previously secured the rights to. It also emphasized that they thoroughly investigated the book before purchasing the rights.
Regarding the claims made in The Observer, these concern the book and are best addressed by the author, Raynor Winn. We’ve forwarded all related correspondence to her and her representative.
When will The Real Salt Path be on TV?
Sky has confirmed that The Real Salt Path (w/t) will be released in December.
So, they haven’t given us a firm release date for the documentary yet, but trust me, I’m checking constantly and will update this page as soon as I hear anything new. I’ll keep you all in the loop!
