The Responder star’s new BBC drama based on “deeply emotional” true story gets release date confirmed

The BBC announced the release date for its upcoming prison drama, Waiting For The Out.

The new series, inspired by Andy West’s popular memoir The Life Inside, will debut on BBC One at 9:30pm on Saturday, January 3rd. All episodes will also be available to stream as a complete set on iPlayer.

Written by Dennis Kelly, who also wrote the musical ‘Matilda’, the show features Josh Finan – known for his role in ‘The Responder’ – as Dan, a philosopher leading a class for inmates.

However, the classes quickly lead Dan to reflect on his family history, and he becomes consumed with thoughts about his father (Gerard Kearns), brother Lee (Stephen Wight), and uncle Frank (Phil Daniels), all of whom were incarcerated.

The show’s preview hints that Dan is facing a growing personal struggle, and his choices are putting his future and his family at risk. The question arises: will he end up in prison, like his father?

The show stars Finan alongside a talented cast including Gerard Kearns, known for his role in ‘The Day of the Jackal’, Samantha Spiro from ‘Sex Education’, Phil Daniels who appeared in ‘House of the Dragon’, Stephen Wight (‘Bergerac’), Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo and Neal Barry, both of whom were in ‘Rain Dogs’.

The film also features performances by Alex Ferns (known for Andor), Francis Lovehall (from A Thousand Blows), Steven Meo (who appeared in House of the Dragon), Ric Renton (One Off), Tom Moutchi (Gladiator II), Nima Taleghani (Heartstopper), Sule Rimi (The Day of the Jackal), Charlie Rix (Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), and Jude Mack (Such Brave Girls).

Production of the six-episode series began in May in the Liverpool area. Actor Finan shared at the time that he was excited for audiences to experience what he described as a story that is both moving, funny, and deeply emotional.

Chris Fry and Katie Carpenter, executive producers at SISTER, stated that “Waiting For The Out” explores complex themes without offering simple solutions. They expressed hope that the story will connect with viewers on a meaningful level.

Lindsay Salt, head of BBC Drama, praised “Waiting For The Out” as a fresh and insightful exploration of what it means to be a man, focusing on themes of forgiveness and finding oneself, all from a highly respected British author.

Jeanette Nordahl (known for ‘The Responder’) and Ben Palmer (‘Douglas is Cancelled’) will direct the series. Louise Sutton (‘Black Mirror’) will produce. Dennis Kelly, Jane Featherstone (‘This is Going to Hurt’), Chris Fry (‘Black Doves’), Katie Carpenter (‘Kaos’), Andy West from SISTER, and Tanya Qureshi for the BBC will serve as executive producers.

Waiting For The Out will premiere on Saturday 3rd January at 9:30pm on BBC One.
