The Response Rian Johnson ALWAYS Has When Someone Gives Him An Idea For A Knives Out Movie

The new mystery, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, is now streaming on Netflix! Fans of the series can once again join detective Benoit Blanc in a thrilling new case. Director Rian Johnson seems to be enjoying this series a lot – he’s already made three movies, and is even considering a fourth! However, he’s made it clear he’s not looking for story ideas from outside sources.

Rian Johnson recently shared on the Awards Radar podcast that he constantly receives story ideas for future mystery films, but he always declines them. It’s not that the ideas are bad, he simply prefers to write his own original stories. He encourages people with good ideas to develop them themselves, rather than pitching them to him.

I often get good ideas, but for me, any script I write always begins with a personal thought or question. If someone suggests a movie idea, my response is usually, ‘You should write that!’

It’s a fair enough answer. Rian Johnson seems happy sticking to Benoit Blanc mysteries that he comes up with, and if anyone else has a good murder mystery idea, they should write it themselves. They’d likely need to create a detective character that’s different enough from Daniel Craig’s to avoid any legal issues, though.

There are tons of fantastic murder mystery movies out there, and the genre is flexible enough to support all sorts of new stories. Rian Johnson’s films, like Knives Out, play with classic mystery elements, but still rely on those familiar traditions. Because of this, it would be relatively simple to start with an idea similar to Knives Out and develop it into something completely original.

Rian Johnson has talked about another idea for a Knives Out movie that someone else suggested. For years, fans have loved the idea of Daniel Craig starring in a Knives Outstyle mystery with a cast of Muppets. Johnson admitted it’s a clever idea, but pointed out it would be tricky to pull off because the story would involve Muppets being both victims and killers, which is a valid concern. For now, fans can enjoy the recent Sesame Street parody to satisfy their craving for a Muppet/ Knives Out* crossover.

Rian Johnson has mentioned they’ve started talking about a fourth Knives Out movie, but haven’t begun actively developing it yet. He seems interested in continuing the series, but needs a compelling idea to move forward. He jokingly added that even a fantastic suggestion from a fan wouldn’t guarantee a new film – if you want to see your idea realized, you’d have to make the movie yourself!
