The Revival of One of Showtime’s Best Shows Ever Is Dead (& That May Be Best)

It seems that the rumored comeback of the popular TV show “Weeds” has been called off, as one of its original stars, Mary-Louise Parker, confirmed in an interview with The Direct. However, she didn’t completely dismiss the possibility of it being revived in a different format at some point down the line. This update offers some clarity after a long period without updates on whether the TV series was still in development. Unfortunately, no details have been shared about why the project was abandoned.

As reported by Parker, she expressed great enthusiasm about the upcoming revival, expressing her belief that it was an excellent concept and it nearly went into production before its sudden cancellation halted plans for her to resume her character as Nancy Botwin. She also hinted that there might still be a possibility for the revival, but due to her age, she may not participate in it.

Parker expressed that she’s not certain about it, but her grandmother seems to be reaching a point where she might not be able to work on film sets for much longer.

During the interview, Parker explained that the event was supposed to take place in Copenhagen, which he found an excellent plan. However, it was suddenly called off multiple times, leaving him feeling frustrated. The most recent cancellation occurred on Thursday for a meeting regarding the project, but by Monday, it had been canceled again. This prolonged anticipation was disheartening since they were eager to collaborate once more, and he was looking forward to the opportunity.

In 2023, rumors surfaced stating that Showtime was considering bringing back two of its highly successful series – “Nurse Jackie” and “Weeds”. At the time, it was speculated that Parker would reprise her role as Nancy and serve as an executive producer for the revival. Interestingly, this was four years after Starz initially announced plans for a “Weeds” comeback in 2019, but that project also didn’t come to fruition. Moreover, another key actor from the original series has expressed a desire to return. Elizabeth Perkins, who portrayed Celia, the nosy neighbor, confirmed her readiness to be part of a potential revival.

From 2005 through 2012, the television series “Weeds” aired for over 100 episodes in total. This comedy-drama revolves around the character Nancy, who, after her husband’s death, starts selling marijuana to support her family and gradually finds herself deeper in the criminal underworld. The show was both commercially and critically successful, earning numerous award nominations throughout its run. Interestingly, the existence of “Weeds” almost caused Vince Gilligan to scrap his plans for “Breaking Bad,” as there were some notable similarities between the two series.

In recent times, numerous shows have made a return, either through spin-offs or reboots. Yet, it might be better if Weeds doesn’t reappear on our television screens. To be honest, it has only been about a decade since the show ended, and fans can still appreciate the original series as it hasn’t lost its appeal in those years.
