The Rookie Star Teases Massive Return Ahead of Season 8 Premiere

This popular crime drama first aired in 2018 and will be back for an eighth season. Throughout its run, the show has experienced changes in its cast, with actors joining and leaving over time.

Tru Valentino and Mercedes Mason are among the recent cast members to depart the show. Deric Augustine, who joined in Season 7, hinted to People magazine that Season 8 will feature a returning character, but he didn’t reveal any details.

Augustine stars as Officer Miles Penn, and with Lisseth Chavez, who plays Officer Celina Juarez, they hinted at the return of some familiar faces.

Augustine hinted that an upcoming episode will feature a character’s return, offering viewers a clear look at the real nature of their relationships and the past experiences that shaped them.

The actor remained tight-lipped about the specific people involved, but hinted that a major confrontation is coming. They described a powerful and skillfully acted scene – or scenes – that fans won’t want to miss, but wouldn’t reveal any further details to avoid spoiling it.

Chavez mentioned they had some fantastic guest stars this season, especially one who appeared in an episode focused on Celina. The episode involved themes of the Secret Service and reincarnation, and that was the core of the storyline.

Augustine predicted the story would be a hit, saying he immediately thought of Celina when he read it. He felt it perfectly matched her style and interests.

The Rookie Season 8 Might See Multiple Returning Cast Members

Alexi Hawley, the creator of The Rookie, has announced that several returning characters will appear in the upcoming season. He specifically mentioned the return of Monica Stevens, the memorable defense lawyer portrayed by Bridget Regan, as one of those characters.

Noah Hawley hinted that Oscar Hutchinson, the escaped convict portrayed by Matthew Glave, will likely reappear later this season. He also suggested there’s a strong possibility Liam Glasser will return, according to an interview with TV Insider.

Hawley mentioned they’re hoping to have Flula Borg, who played Skip Tracer Randy, return for future projects, as he’s always a great addition. They’re also continuing to try and schedule Pete Davidson, despite his busy schedule, and he’s expressed interest in coming back.

In the premiere episode, titled “Czech Mate,” the antagonist Monica surprisingly joins forces with the LAPD, FBI, and Interpol in Prague to pursue dangerous terrorists both inside and outside the U.S. Filming took place on location overseas, a practice increasingly common for streaming and cable series due to budgetary requirements.

The Rookie returns on ABC for Season 8 on Jan. 6.
